Mountain Club of South Africa - Hottentots Holland Section The Mountain Club of South Africa offers the opportunity to become part of a network of like-minded people, whatever activity you engage in.

Part of the Mountain Club of South Africa (MCSA), we engage in mountaineering, rock climbing, bouldering, hiking, expeditions, mountain search and rescue, conservation of mountain areas, and procurement of access for mountaineering.

The MCSA Stellenbosch section is hosting this year's Western Cape Joint Meet in Du Toit's Kloof over the weekend of 1 to 3 November 2024.

We have a variety of activities planned in the Du Toit's Kloof valley over multiple days, however the majority of the meets are planned for Saturday, 2 November 2024.

The MCSA Du Toit's Kloof hut will be used as a base camp. There will be an option to sleep at the hut on Friday night, before the majority of the meets, and Saturday night, after the meets. Note that space in the hut is limited to 12 people but there is lots of camping space outside the hut, first-come-first-serve.

Here is a short summary of the available activities:

Friday
Option to sleep over at the hut (note that space in the hut is limited to 12 people but there is lots of camping space outside the hut).
Possible short sundowner hike.

Saturday
Scrambling hike - Cascades (or similar hike)
Trail Run - Du Toit's Peak & Goudini Sneeukop (or similar run)
Sport climbing - HellFire Crag
Technical (Abseil) Kloofing - ZigZag Kloof (or similar kloof)
Easy Hike - Du Toit's Peak Pinnacle

A Snare Awareness Workshop with Cape Leopard Trust is to be held at Lourensford 31 Aug
This free-to-attend half-day workshop forms part of the Snare Free initiative, and focuses on the issue of illegal wire snares, and provides information, practical skills, and tools for landowners, managers and community members to prevent snaring in the Helderberg area and surrounds.

The recent rains and flooding forced several closures of CapeNature reserves and hiking trails. However, CapeNature staff has been hard at work behind the scenes repairing the trails to make sure that our visitors can fully enjoy our lovely reserves and all the activities it offers. Here’s a quick update on reserves where some of the hiking trails are still closed:

Hottentots Holland - Sphinx & Palmiet – opening 24 July & Orchard trails – opening 17 August
Jonkershoek – All trails – opening 2nd August
Assegaaibosch - All trails - opening 2nd August
Grootwinterhoek – All trails - opening 3rd August
Limietberg – All trails - All trails – opening 30th July
Gamkaberg -Tierkloof Hiking Trail - opening 23rd August
Kogelberg – Oudebosch & Kogelberg trails – 30th July
Kogelberg - Highlands & Perdeberg trails – 1st August
