It is with heavy hearts that we at the Coalition of African Animal Welfare Organisations (CAAWO) mourn the passing of Dr Jane Goodall. A true pioneer, her groundbreaking research and unwavering dedication to conservation transformed our understanding of the natural world. Her legacy of community-centred conservation, which empowers local communities to protect their environment and its inhabitants, deeply resonates with our mission at CAAWO.

Dr Goodall's work was a powerful reminder that the well-being of animals, people, and the environment is interconnected. As we honour her memory, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing this holistic vision across Africa. Her life's work will continue to inspire our efforts to create a sustainable and compassionate future for all.

🌍 Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future

CAAWO is thrilled to have its Executive Director present *"Echoes of the Ancestors"* at , where we explored how *Indigenous Ecological Knowledge (IEK)* can revolutionise Africa’s sustainability efforts. From climate-resilient agriculture rooted in pastoralist traditions to ethnoveterinary breakthroughs, IEK isn’t just history—it’s a roadmap for ethical, effective solutions.

As Executive Director of the Coalition of African Animal Welfare Organisations (CAAWO), I was honoured to participate in the panel “Thinking Strategically and Pragmatically about Farmed Animal Advocacy in Africa” at Summit Kenya 2025. This discussion addressed the critical need to prevent the rise of factory farming across Africa by building culturally relevant strategies and forging alliances with grassroots and Indigenous efforts. We explored how Africa’s diverse, historical relationship with animals for food must inform advocacy, ensuring interventions are led by local experts with firsthand knowledge. The panel emphasised the importance of synergies between global animal rights movements and African animal welfare initiatives, which often serve as a vital bridge toward recognising animals as sentient beings. By prioritising collaboration and culturally attuned approaches, we can steer food systems toward sustainability and compassion, curbing industrialised agriculture’s spread. CAAWO remains committed to advancing these efforts, amplifying African voices in the global fight for animal welfare. Learn more about our work at www.caawo.org.
