On this Heritage Day, we are reminded that heritage is not only something we preserve in museums, photographs or traditions, it lives in people, relationships and the stories we pass from one generation to the next.

Intergenerational living creates spaces where older and younger people can learn from one another, contribute to one another’s lives and experience a genuine sense of belonging. The Eden Alternative reminds us that a caring, inclusive and vibrant community enables people of every age and ability to experience well-being, and that relationships across generations can help create a life worth living.

Perhaps one of the greatest ways we can honour our heritage is to ensure that generations do not simply live alongside one another, but truly live together, sharing stories, wisdom, laughter, care ,and hope for the future.

Today, on World Alzheimer’s Day, we honour not only those living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, but also the people who walk alongside them every day.

We recognise the family members, friends, professional carers, nurses, therapists and communities who offer their time, patience, companionship and care, often in ways that go unseen.

A diagnosis may change many things, but it does not erase a person’s identity, relationships, need for belonging, capacity for joy, or right to live a meaningful life.

Today is a reminder to see the person before the diagnosis, to support those who provide care, and to continue building communities where no one has to face the journey alone.

Over the past two days, our Eden Mentor, Willem, had the privilege of facilitating an inspiring Eden Alternative workshop with the leadership and care teams at the Rand Aid Association.

What stood out most was not simply the conversations about culture change, but the genuine willingness of people to listen deeply, challenge long-held assumptions, and imagine what is possible when relationships become the foundation of care.

Together, they explored how wise leadership, Listening Circles, person-directed decision-making, and the Domains of Well-Being can transform not only the lives of older persons, but also the experience of everyone who lives and works within the community.

Culture change is never a destination; it is a continuous journey of learning, courage and growth. Thank you to the Rand Aid team for your openness, energy and commitment to creating communities where every person can experience purpose, belonging and a life worth living.

Introducing the Tafta Elder Abuse Line (TEAL) 💙

Launched on 23 November 2022, TEAL was established to give older persons across South Africa a safe and confidential way to report abuse, seek guidance, and access support.

Since its launch, the helpline has received over 4,000 calls and facilitated more than 1,000 referrals to social workers, community organisations, and support services — helping older persons find protection, care, and dignity.

Elder abuse often goes unreported, especially when the person causing harm is someone the older person depends on. TEAL exists to ensure that no older person has to suffer in silence.

If you are worried about an older person — or if you are an older person who feels unsafe, mistreated, or afraid — confidential help is available.
