New Shelters at the Irwin's Guardian Stud sponsored by Dr Scott Mellis.

A huge thank you to Dr Scott Mellis for sponsoring the brand-new shelters at the Irwin's Guardian Stud! πŸ†πŸ’š

These shelters provide essential protection and comfort for the guardian animals that play such an important role in helping farmers coexist with predators, reducing conflict and supporting conservation efforts across South Africa.

Partnerships like these make a real difference, helping us continue our mission of protecting free-roaming cheetahs while supporting sustainable solutions for people and wildlife.

Thank you, Dr Scott Mellis, for your generous support and commitment to conservation. Together, we are building a future where cheetahs and communities can thrive side by side.

🌍 World Environment Day

World Environment Day reminds us of a simple truth: protecting our environment and protecting our free-roaming cheetahs are the same fight β€” and neither can survive without long-term, committed support.

Every day, the Cheetah Outreach Trust works across South Africa’s farmlands to keep cheetahs on the landscape, reduce conflict, and build a future where people and predators can coexist. But meaningful, lasting conservation doesn’t happen in a single season. It takes years of monitoring, years of farmer partnerships, years of guardian dog placements, and years of keeping corridors open so cheetahs can move safely across our shared environment.

πŸ’› Why your long-term support matters

Sustained coexistence work β€” Conflict mitigation only succeeds when we can stay on the ground, year after year, supporting farmers and protecting cheetahs.

Guardian dog programmes β€” These dogs save livestock and save cheetahs, but training, veterinary care, and follow-ups require ongoing funding.

Landscape protection β€” Keeping movement corridors open is a long-term commitment to healthy ecosystems.

Research and monitoring β€” Tracking cheetahs across vast farmlands helps us understand threats and respond before populations decline further.

Community partnerships β€” Trust is built slowly. Awareness grows slowly. Real change takes time β€” and stable support.

This World Environment Day, we’re asking those who believe in healthy landscapes, thriving wildlife, and a future where cheetahs still run free to stand with us β€” not just today, but for the long road ahead.

Your commitment keeps conservation alive. Your support keeps cheetahs on the land.

πŸ† South Africa’s first-ever Free-Roaming Cheetah Census (2022–2025) has delivered the most comprehensive β€” and sobering β€” assessment of our wild free-roaming cheetahs to date.

After three years of fieldwork across nearly 100,000 kmΒ² of farmland in the Northern Cape, North West and Limpopo, the results reveal a critical conservation challenge:

🟠 Only 83 adult free-roaming cheetahs were identified on camera traps in the study area.

🟠 A total of 119 individuals were identified, including cubs and subadults, but low cub survival and high mortality rates threaten the future of the population.

🟠 20% of known adults died during the 3.5-year census period, largely due to human-related causes such as shooting, snaring, and vehicle collisions.

🟠 DNA analysis confirmed ZERO livestock remains in cheetah s**t samples. More than 52% of prey detected were small game species, illustrating clearly that cheetahs prefer natural prey over livestock.

🟠 Movement data shows increasing habitat fragmentation, while genetic results indicate that population connectivity is hanging by a thread.

πŸ“Š This groundbreaking study used:
πŸ“Έ 5.2 million camera-trap images
πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ 299 farmer interviews
🧬 164 s**t samples
πŸ“ 20 GPS-collared cheetahs
πŸ“ Public sightings and field verification

πŸ’” The message is clear: South Africa’s last free-roaming cheetahs survive almost entirely on farmland, and their future depends on coexistence between people and wildlife.

🀝 The census highlights the urgent need for:
βœ… Practical conflict-mitigation support
βœ… Incentives for wildlife-friendly fencing
βœ… Stronger law enforcement
βœ… Long-term monitoring
βœ… A unified national conservation strategy
*And cooperation between landowners and conservation organisations.

This important project was made possible through a partnership between Ashia Cheetah Conservation, Cheetah Outreach Trust, the University of Groningen, participating farmers, landowners, and local communities.

πŸ’› Help us continue protecting South Africa’s free-roaming cheetahs.

Tomorrow these brave little apprentice guardian dog puppies leave for their new farms to begin bonding with the livestock they’ll one day protect. But three of them still don’t have sponsors and names yet…
They’re standing right at the start of their life’s purpose β€” but they can’t take that step without someone choosing to sponsor and name them.
If you’ve ever wanted to make a real, tangible difference for farmers and cheetahs , this is the moment to act.
Please visit our website below.
We urgently need these pups sponsored and named today so they can begin their journey with the support and identity they deserve. πŸ’›πŸΎπŸΎ

Exciting News from Cheetah Outreach Trust SA 🐾
Our newest litter of beautiful Anatolian puppies is almost ready for their new roles in livestock conservation!

These incredible guardian dogs play a vital role in protecting livestock and helping reduce predator conflict on farms across South Africa.

We will be placing the puppies next week, and we are still urgently looking for 3 more adoptions/sponsors to support this important conservation initiative. 🐢🌍
