We have been sharing a lot this month about the scale of the child protection crisis in South Africa. And we know that sometimes, reading all of that can leave you feeling a bit helpless.

So today we want to flip that feeling on its head. Because there are real, practical things you can do right now. You do not need to be a social worker or run an NPO to make a difference. You just need to decide that this matters to you.

Here are 3 ways to get involved this Child Protection Month and beyond:
01 - Volunteer your skills.
We are always looking for people who want to show up for this work. Whether through an internship or skills-based volunteering, send your motivation letter and CV to [email protected] and let's talk.

02 - Support us financially.
Connect Network is a registered Section 18A organisation - which means your donation is tax deductible. Every contribution goes directly towards equipping the organisations serving women and children at risk across the Greater Cape Town area. Donate at connectnetwork.org.za/our-focus/donate

03 - Connect your organisation.
If you lead or work for an NPO or church serving women and children at risk, we would love to have you in the network. Find out more about becoming an affiliate at connectnetwork.org.za

The need is real. The work is happening. There is a place in it for you.

We want to talk about what is actually happening. Because if we are going to work together to end violence against children in South Africa, we all need to understand what we are up against.

The numbers are hard. But they are important. And they are the reason 90+ organisations in our network get up every morning and do this work.

Swipe through 5 things every South African needs to know about child wellbeing in our country. 👉

Share this with someone who needs to see it. The more people understand the reality, the more people will choose to do something about it. And that is how communities change.

Every child has the right to safety. To education. To love and belonging. To a future free from violence.

These are not wishes. They are rights.

They are written into the South African Constitution. They are protected by the Children's Act. They belong to every child in this country, regardless of where they were born or what their family is going through.

And yet, every day, those rights are violated.

A child grows up in a home where violence is normal. A child drops out of school because it is no longer safe to get there. A child is abused by someone who should have been their protector.

That is why organisations like the 90+ affiliates in the Connect Network get up every morning and do what they do. Because rights written on paper mean nothing if there are no people, no systems, and no networks to make them real.

This week and every day we fight for the children who cannot fight for themselves.

This week is about South Africa's children. But it is also about the people who show up for them.

The teacher who noticed a child was quieter than usual and took five minutes to check in.

The social worker who drove an extra hour to reach a family no one else would.

The neighbour who opened her door. The coach who stayed late. The volunteer who came back every week, even on the hard weeks.

These people do not often get recognised. But Child Protection Week is for them too. Because protection does not only happen inside NPOs and government departments. It happens in the quiet, ordinary moments when someone decides to pay attention.

We want to celebrate those people this week.

Drop a name in the comments, or tag someone who has shown up for a child in your community. Let us fill this comment section with the people who deserve to be seen.

We spend a lot of time talking about what child protection looks like at a system level. The organisations. The policies. The training. The networks.

But this weekend we want to ask something simpler.

What does child protection look like in YOUR community?

Because the truth is, it does not always look like a social worker or a government programme. Sometimes it looks like a neighbour who notices something is wrong and says something. A teacher who takes the time to ask. A church that opens its doors to a family that has nowhere else to go. A friend who believes a child when they speak up.

Child protection starts long before a crisis. It lives in the everyday choices of communities who pay attention, who care, and who refuse to stay silent.

Today, it begins.

National Child Protection Week 2026 is here, and this year's theme, "Working together in ending violence against children," is one we don't just believe in. We live it.

For Connect Network, it's a description of every single day across 22 years of work.

Right now, across Greater Cape Town and beyond, 90+ organisations are showing up. Social workers are on the ground. ECD practitioners are opening their doors. Counsellors are sitting with families in their hardest moments. Community workers are knocking and knocking again.

None of them are doing it alone. That's the whole point.

345,000+ women and children at risk have been reached, not because of one organisation doing heroic work in isolation, but because groups stopped working in silos and started working together.

Today, we invite you to be part of that too.

Share this post. Follow this page. And carry this week with you long past Sunday, because the children who need protection don't stop needing it when the week ends.

Together we protect.

Every child should have adequate food and nutrition. Especially when there is sufficient food for all in our country. Yet, nearly 50% of our children do not have enough food for their daily needs.

Inadequate food is an issue of injustice.
