Helderberg Eco Rangers

Helderberg Eco Rangers The Helderberg Eco-Rangers is a childrens group where youngsters meet on regular basis to enjoy natu beetles with intricate patterns, tiny bugs, fungi.

The Helderberg Eco-Rangers club is all about having fun while learning about and exploring nature and our environment. After all, we live in one of the most scenic parts of the world offering a diverse and magnificent floral kingdom along with a number of majestic creatures such as the Bontebok, Zebra, Caracal and leopard to name a few. Take a closer look, get down on your knees and you will disco

ver a world often overlooked by the naked eye . . . Look up and you see the sugar birds flitting here and there, an African Harrier Hawk seeking a meal, brightly coloured butterflies and dragon files dancing on the breeze. Look further and you see the craggy mountains – the Helderberg and the Hottentots Holland ranges forming the backdrop to a land filled with beauty and life. You will be caught in wonder if you just take the time to be with nature. In the Helderberg, outdoors life is an adventure for all to enjoy and Eco-Rangers is here to help you and your children embark on a journey you will not regret. The Helderberg Eco-Rangers is based right in the middle of nature! We meet each Friday (term time only) at the Environmental Education Center in the Helderberg Nature Reserve of Somerset West. This is the perfect home for this children’s group. With a safe, nature filled classroom environment our children are able to listen, learn and grow while being guided through amazing facts about the world around us. Lessons are most often presented to the children via an interactive overhead presentation. Following this, the children will have the opportunity to work on something practical be it an art, craft or science experiment relevant to the subject being discussed. Classroom sessions are always filled with fun and laughter as we feel this is the best way for children to learn and develop. They enjoy a fun, hands on approach to learning. Of course, being in the Nature Reserve, many of our lessons take place while out in the field interacting and becoming connected with nature. The outdoors is one big and exciting classroom. While out and about children have time to discover and explore in a safe place. They can make friends, study nature, play and just be children. As we know, being outside is beneficial to us all and research has shown us that children who have access to the outdoors are healthier, happier, calmer, more focused, inspired and more creative. Children of today don’t have the freedoms we used to have. They can’t just take a bike and go riding around town for fun. They don’t have opportunity to meet up with friends and go hiking up the mountains or swimming in the local rivers. And parents are most often caught up with work and life with little or no time to spend with their children in nature. Our world has become so unfriendly to children and families and thus we have the nature deficit disorder showing up all over the place. This is where Eco-Rangers comes in to help children and families reconnect and enjoy time out in nature. We want to bring back the joy of nature into the lives of the children of today. The Helderberg Eco-Rangers is a family friendly group. Although Eco-Rangers is primarily aimed at Children aged between 3 and 14, we do like to encourage parents to join in whenever they can. Being together as a family in nature can help develop stronger, happier relationships between children and parents. Grandparents can join as well! There are three groups which children can join. The Genets – this group is aimed at children aged 3 – 5 years
This group meets at 13.30 each Friday for an hour. The Caracals – this group is aimed at children aged 6 – 9 years
This group meets at 14.30 each Friday and finish at 17.00

The Leopards – this group is aimed at children aged 10 – 14+ years
This group meets at 14.30 each Friday and finish at 17.00

Our weekly children’s programme which is held each Friday consists of nature projects, nature slide shows, environmental education sessions, wildlife observations, hiking, practical workshops, conservation led tasks such as tree planting and alien species clearing. Most importantly of all it offers children time to be with friends and to have fun. Children who are members and attend the weekly meetings are able to take part in projects where they can work towards badges. These badges give children the incentive to learn more, become involved, take pride in themselves and their environment and share their knowledge. Our badge system helps children to develop of sense of achievement while recognising those who really put in a great deal of effort and hard driven desire to achieve a goal. Children who show a particular interest in a specialised subject can be introduced to the relevant person, body or community. We currently have a couple of children who enjoy botany and are now involved with ‘CREW’ and spend time submitting photos to www.ispot.org.za/. Other children are involved with leopard monitoring. These projects allow the children to learn specialised skills as well as to equip them with experience and exposure which can benefit them in the future. Children can also apply some of the knowledge they learn to their work and projects at school thus improving their grades in areas such as Geography, Natural sciences and life skills. Eco-Rangers offers so much more than just nature . . . it helps to develop the child as a whole, provides them with opportunity to learn new skills, puts children in touch with community projects, allows the child to feel and be a part of something bigger. Apart from the weekly meetings, we run a series of outings, outdoor events and workshops throughout the year that take place in natural areas of Somerset West and surrounds. We normally organise two local outings per term. These will take place over a weekend. There will also be one or two long distance outings for families who are interested. During the school holidays more events are organised. These may include week-long nature programmes, survival camps and sleep-outs. Our outings and holiday programs are open to anyone wanting to be out in nature in the company of children. Don’t let nature pass you by. Give the Television a break, put away the Ipad and Xbox. Put on your hiking boots, take a breath of fresh air and embrace yourself and your family for some good healthy fun. Discover more and be amazed – Join the Eco Rangers. Find us on:

World Environment Day 2026

Today we observe World Environment Day - one of many days on the calendar dedicated to causes that matter deeply. While these awareness days serve an important purpose, the real challenge is ensuring that their message does not last for only 24 hours.

Caring for our environment cannot be confined to a single day, week, or campaign. It must become a way of life - reflected in the choices we make, the resources we use, the waste we create, and the legacy we leave behind.

The health of our planet is not a once-a-year conversation; it is a daily responsibility shared by all of us. World Environment Day reminds us to pause and reflect, but the true measure of our commitment is what we do tomorrow, next week, and throughout the year.

May today inspire not just awareness, but lasting action - because every day should be Environment Day.

Happy Friday everyone!

Happy Earth Day, dear Helderberg Eco-Ranger family 🌍💚

For us, every day is Earth Day . . .
But today invites us to offer just a little more -
a little more care, a little more understanding,
and a little more sharing of our love and concern
for the home we call Earth.

Here’s the truth . . .
The world doesn’t need perfection from us.
It simply needs us to care.

One small step.
One mindful choice.
One quiet moment of respect for all we’ve been given.
That is how change begins.

Earth Day is a gentle reminder that our relationship with the living world is something we can nurture, every single day.
Small acts, done with love and intention, become a path - one that leads to healing, hope, and harmony.

Today, we pause to honour this beautiful, breathing planet that sustains us all.

Every tree, every ocean wave, every bird song, every breath -
reminds us that we are not separate from the Earth . . .
we are part of it.

Peace in the world begins with peace in our relationship with nature.

So today, we invite you to:
🌿 Walk gently
🌿 Speak gratitude
🌿 Act with care

Together, we can do big things - by starting small, and starting now.

“How you live each day matters. What you do makes a difference - and you get to decide what kind of difference that will be.”

How will you honour the Earth today?

Blessed Earth Day 🌱✨
May we continue to grow, protect, and cherish this precious planet - together.

With love,
Your Helderberg Eco-Ranger family 💚

The Helderberg Eco-Rangers are off to a wonderful start in 2026! Our nature group continues to explore the outdoors, inspire curious young minds, and give children the opportunity to make new friends while learning how to care for the natural world around them.

This year our groups are smaller, which allows for more confidence, connection, and meaningful learning experiences for each child. We still have space for a few more young nature enthusiasts to join us, so please get in touch if your child enjoys nature, plants, animals, and outdoor adventures. Parents and grandparents are always welcome to join our sessions free of charge.

We are also looking for enthusiastic individuals / volunteers to join our team - people who love children, nature, crafting, outdoor exploration, and natural science.

Term Highlights
Mini Wildlife Veterinarians
Our Genet (Tiny Tots) group continued their Mini Veterinarian theme. The young Eco-Rangers treated a variety of patients including rabbits, giraffes, dinosaurs, and even a leopard! They practised teamwork while taking temperatures, dressing wounds, giving injections, and caring for injured animals. The session ended with the children building their own working stethoscopes which were a huge hit.

Urban Wildlife
Our Caracal group explored the topic of Urban Wildlife, learning about the animals that live alongside us in our cities, gardens, and homes. The Eco-Rangers discussed the challenges wildlife faces in urban environments and how we can help protect them. One important project involved creating bright window decals to prevent birds from flying into glass windows. The children also carried out a bird-safety audit of their homes and schools.

Paardevlei Adventure
Despite the very hot weather, our Eco-Rangers enjoyed an exciting outing to Paardevlei, where we spotted an amazing variety of birdlife including spoonbills, flamingos, coots, spur-winged geese, herons, egrets, and swifts. We even saw springbok and tiny mice along the paths. It was a wonderful reminder of the rich wildlife living right on our doorstep in Somerset West.

New Child Friendly Microscopes
We were thrilled to receive a generous donation of two portable digital microscopes capable of magnifying objects up to 1000x. These microscopes allow our Eco-Rangers to explore the tiny world of nature in incredible detail and even take photos and videos of their discoveries.

Spectacular Spiders
Our Genet group also began exploring the fascinating world of spiders. We learned how spiders differ from insects, why they are important for ecosystems, and discovered some incredible species such as jumping spiders. Each child created and decorated their own spider models to end the term.

Thank You
A heartfelt thank you to Louis, Penny, Esmay, and Amy, as well as the Helderberg Nature Reserve and the Friends of Helderberg, for their continued support and for providing us with a wonderful place to call home.

We look forward to many more adventures next term!

Last week’s adventure at Paardevlei felt more like a challenging desert expedition than a cool, windblown stroll along the vlei! A HUGE shout-out to our brave rangers who joined us in the sweltering, humid heat - we didn’t just walk . . . we oozed our way along the vlei paths! 💦😅. It sure was not easy!

And wow - was it worth it! The wetlands were bursting with life. We spotted elegant Spoonbills sweeping their beaks through the shallows, a rather lonely (but very fabulous!) Greater Flamingo, and hundreds of coots scooting across the water and nesting in their clever reed mounds.

There were bold Spur-winged Geese, dignified Black-headed Herons, speedy White-rumped Swifts, chatty Eurasian Starlings, delicate Little Egrets, and so many more feathered friends. Anouk and I were especially thrilled to see a busy little Three-banded Plover darting along the wetland edges.

We even had a few raptors soaring overhead - possibly an African Marsh Harrier keeping a watchful eye on things! All of us admired the springbok, and some sharp-eyed rangers spotted tiny mice scuttling across the paths.

What an incredible reminder that Paardevlei is truly teeming with life - wild, wonderful, and right on the doorstep of bustling Somerset West. Even our Caracals and Leopards witnessed urban wildlife in full action! This tied nicely in with their - 'What lives in the City'. We will definitely return . . . preferably when the sun is a little less enthusiastic. ☀️

🐦 The Woodpecker Mystery: The Inevitability of the Improbable

An evening of science, stories & discovery for curious Eco-Rangers and their families

This March, step into a real-life natural history mystery that stretches across oceans and continents!

On Thursday, 5 March 2026 at 18:30, at the Helderberg Nature Reserve Environmental Education Centre for a fascinating talk by geologist and passionate birder Nick Norman.

While working in Brazil, Nick spotted a woodpecker that looked astonishingly like the ones we see right here in South Africa. That surprising encounter sparked a question that would lead deep into the ancient past:

🌍 How did the same plants and birds come to live on continents now separated by the vast South Atlantic Ocean?

Drawing on geology, birdlife, biogeography and gripping natural history accounts, this talk uncovers an extraordinary scientific puzzle linking Africa and South America. Inspired by Sherlock Holmes’ famous line — “Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth” — Nick reveals how trees and birds made seemingly impossible journeys across an ocean.

Perfect for:

* 🌿 Eco-Rangers who love nature and big questions
* 🐦 Bird enthusiasts
* 🌎 Families curious about Earth’s ancient history
* 🔍 Young scientists who enjoy solving mysteries
