The Simon’s Town Music Festival takes place over the weekend 19 to 21 September 2014, with concerts in two beautiful and historic churches, and in other venues. The programme features classic music, rock, jazz and blues, and two youth outreach groups. On Friday evening the festival opens with a performance by the baroque ensemble Camerata Tinta Barocca, who will be performing three of JS Bach's mo
st popular works, his Brandenburg Concertos number 3, 4 and 5. Also on the programme is Telemann's Viola Concerto in G Major, with the soloist Emile de Roubaix. On Saturday morning Peter Martens, cello soloist, performs the Bach suites for solo cello, numbers 1, 2 and 3 in the Sts. The program lasts approximately one hour and audience members can view an art exhibition in the church as well as sculptures in the church gardens. This exhibition is open all weekend. In the afternoon we rock with the Robin Auld Trio, featuring Robin and musos Roger Bashew on bass and Paul Tizzard on drums. Also in the afternoon, Cape Town opera divas Violina Angeulov and Beverly Chiat, accompanied by the accomplished repetature pianist, Este Visser, perform a selection of Favourite Opera Arias at the Methodist Church. On Saturday evening, the festival Gala Concert, featuring the Pro Musica Divina orchestra, (directed by composer/conductor Steven van der Merwe), is performed at the Methodist church. The programme consists of Mendelssohn string symphony no.12, Mozart clarinet concert (soloist David Little) and Symphony no 45 (Farewell) by Joseph Haydn. On Sunday morning virtuoso harpsichordist/organist, Erik Dippenaar, gives an organ and harpsichord recital in the Sts. Between 11 and 3pm two youth groups, the Masi Music Outreach (a violin ensemble under direction of Titia Blake) and the Izivunguvungu Youth band will be performing in and around Jubilee Square. In the afternoon the unique marimba & vibraphone duo "Four IV Two" perform at the Methodist Church. We wind down the weekend with a super cool bluesy jazz session by Jeremy Olivier and friends which you won't want to miss.
