Our centre is unique in the sense that severely disabled children of all ages are accommodated. The centre was established in 19
80 with the purpose of providing daycare and therapeutic services to disabled children. At first the centre had to share the accommodation, but since 1993 a new “custom made” premises is used. Horizon is a Non-Government Organisation and a Non-Profitable Organisation. The salaries of the permanent personnel are not subsidized - only the children are receiving subsidies from the state. Sponsors are always required for the children with extra financial needs. WHAT WE PROVIDE ON A DAILY BASIS;
Meals include a light, nutritious breakfast as well as a light, warm lunch. Loving care. To ensure that the children are taken care of according to their specific needs, they are divided into the following groups:
Haasbekkies (guidance by Katriena Makopo)
Ultimately disabled children. Raasbekkies (guidance by Elsie Malungane)
Children who can sit only and who needs intensive care. Suikerbekkies (guidance by Martha Mahlati and Bessie Maloney)
Children who are being taught to use the toilet and who are receiving passive stimulation. Rumoerbekkies (guidance by Lientjie de Beer)
Children who are self sufficient. They can build puzzles, sing songs, chat to each other and do colouring and finger paint activities. Stimulation according to an occupational therapy programme includes the following activities: weekly music therapy; walking; ball games; lots of talking; ripping of paper; finger paint and colouring in; pasting; paging through magazines; learn to feed yourself, etc. Mini buses to transport children daily to and from their homes. The route covers the whole of Pretoria except the townships (because of security reasons) All our mini buses are being monitored by Netstar. The mini buses leave at 6:00. to start picking up the children and arrive at the centre at about 8:00. Transport back home start at 13:00 and the last child will be home round about 15:00.
