Thembalethu Home Based Care was started in 1999 to combat the scourge of HIV and AIDS that was having a devastating affect on the community. The negative impacts of HIV were unprecedented and unexpected and the health system was swamped. During 2000 - 2006, before ARVs (antiretroviral treatment) was freely available, offering palliative care in the home was a way of easing the suffering of patien
ts and identifying children at risk. In 2002 Thembalethu had to open a coffin making project to handle the escalating number of burials (900 in 2003). From 2007 the Government provided better capacity to clinics and hospitals and ARVs have increased the life expectancy of HIV positive people thus reducing the burden of care on Thembalethu. This has enabled Thembalethu to broaden our focus while still continuing with home-based care on a smaller scale, responding to needs as they arise. The work of Thembalethu Nkomazi today includes:
(1) EDUCATION & YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
- After School Kids Klubs
- Zakhele Drama Team in conjunction with ZA Foundation (UK). The team educates locally and internationally on health and gender-related issues through their creative drama and dance. ZA Foundation has established the twinning of 17 schools in Nkomazi with 17 schools in South West England.
- Education centre offering internet facilities and mentoring for tertiary distance education students.
- Leadership and mentoring program with SHIPP (USAID) in high schools through our GOLD program. (2) HEALTH PROMOTION
- HIV testing and treatment
- Home based care for the sick
- Women of Hope project

- Garden Project: teaching families how to grow their own food and combat hunger and improve nutrition

Thembalethu Nkomazi is a registered NPO and has good working relationships with the Local Aids Council, Dept of Health and the Dept of Education.
