VAAL TRIANGLE - The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) has urged the public to return products containing zinc picolinate and selenium over safety concerns for children. Sahpra has also instructed health professionals to stop distributing, selling, or dispensing these products and to remove them from shelves and storage facilities. The regulator warns that zinc picolinate can cause side effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headaches, and indigestion. Sahpra says the absorption of zinc picolinate is unpredictable, increasing the risk of adverse effects, and making it unsuitable for use in children.

However, the Health supplement company Zinplex has criticised SAHPRA over its warning. Zinplex says their products are formulated by healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, and manufactured according to strict quality, safety, and regulatory standards. They says they have not received any safety reports or evidence suggesting that their products pose a risk to children when used as directed.

BREAKING NEWS: A fatal accident occurred this morning involving a side tipper truck and a scholar transport vehicle on the Golden Highway in Vanderbijlpark. Newzroom Afrika reports that 11 fatalities have been confirmed, while five other pupils were taken to the hospital. Emergency Management Services personnel are at the scene between Bophelong and Sebokeng, where the accident occurred. Briefly reported that parents with children attending Vaal Primary School and surrounding schools are advised to check whether their children made it safely to school if they were using a scholar transport vehicle.
