A beautiful little throwback that we never got to share here. 💚

Almost two years ago, a few months after Earth Hand and Fibre came to life, we had our very first crochet fashion show at Ubuntu.Hub - November 2024.

If you were at our first ever crochet gathering earlier that year (snacks, music, yarn and just getting to know each other), you would know how much this meant. From just meeting as strangers who love crochet, to actually making pieces and putting on a whole fashion show together.🥹

On the day, some of the designers from that first gathering came through and made beautiful outfits with their hands, yarn and just a hook. Our models in different ages, different genders, different sizes, different skin tones. All Black, all beautiful. That was the whole point. Showing that crochet is for everybody and every body.✨

After the runway, we watched a documentary about colorism in African countries, sponsored by Sunshine Cinema and that really shifted the day. We didn’t just talk about clothes. We talked about sustainable fashion, about inclusivity, about skin tone, about our own experiences with colorism. It became so much bigger than just a fashion show.

This was just the beginning for us. 🧶

Throwback to our 2nd Crochet Picnic 🧶

This one was everything we hoped for and more. Bigger numbers than our first, and the most beautiful mix of people; gents, women, grannies, little ones all with hooks in hand. 🤩

A real family day of sharing skills, learning skills, and building community. The venue views were perfect, the weather took a minute to warm up to us but eventually settled, and we got to play, laugh, and learn. 🌻

As always, thank you to everyone who came and made it so wholesome. More picnics loading so be on the lookout. 👀🤭

There's power in shaking it all loose. 🌀
At Moments for Me, Desiree Ranta led us through healing with movement, waist and hips, specifically. Because shame keeps us still. It teaches us to shrink, to hold back, to feel too shy to take up space in our own bodies.
Movement is the opposite of that, it's unlearning stillness, unlearning shame, one shake at a time. 💚

A few things movement does for us:
Loosens tight hips + releases stored tension
Gets you out of your head and back into your body
Shifts stagnant energy (physically and emotionally)
Lets go of what shame taught you to hold onto

Watch. Feel it. Then go shake something loose today. 💃🏾🫵🏾

We thank everyone who was there for coming. We were able to share spaces with women we didn't know but came to be connected to.
We aim to host more of these sessions, be on the lookout for that. 🤩

Earth Hand and Fibre has always served as a reminder to keep living within our communities; to share spaces with different kinds of people and to empower one another.

Hosting Moments For Me with Sankofa was a commitment to that reminder and we are more than happy with how it went. We danced, we shared stories, and more importantly, we listened to one another.

Thank you Mmatsatsi Alice Mokoena for your lovely singing. Re rebogile o fitlhile o tlo re opella. Re leboga basadi ba batshwanang le wena ba re rutang dilo tse botlhokwa.💚

Thank you to Mama Desiree Ranta and Sankofa for lending us the space and believing in our mission. We both shared how uneasy the journey can become and we came together to offer celebration how far we’ve come, and to gain insight into where we’re going.

-lunch and snacks(to share)
-some sweets(to share and for the candybowl challenge)
-1 egg and a spoon(boil the egg)
