TEARS Intervention specialist is often the first person, a victim of GBV speaks to, about an incident, may it be r**e, domestic violence, sexual assault, or child abuse. They need to be knowledgeable, compassionate, and caring. We care and we believe the caller without hesitation and offer them the support they need to be in a place to heal. Our intervention specialists are well trained and all our cases are supervised. How We Assist:

We provide assistance with exit strategies from a dangerous relationship (each day in South Africa 3 women are killed by their intimate partners)

We provide assistance with obtaining a Protection Order or opening a police case. Once their safety is ensured, we refer them for further intervention, such as counseling. In the event of a life-threatening situation, we help them to identify a place of safety. We can also assist with finding a shelter. We ensure that they receive medical assistance. We provide you with information such as the different steps that need to take place, and why these are important. The Facts behind GBV in South Africa:

Statistics show us, the breakdown of abuse perpetrators, that approximately 2/3 sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows. R**e is officially an epidemic, yet the reality seems far removed from most South Africans. The community at large plays a vital role, in fighting this epidemic! Across South Africa, discussions continue around the role schools should play in teaching body safety, consent, boundaries, and unsafe touch in age-appropriate ways.

The Department of Basic Education has acknowledged the importance of strengthening child protection and safety education in schools. At the same time, many educators report feeling underprepared to facilitate these sensitive conversations confidently and appropriately.

South Africa continues to face alarming levels of violence against children, making prevention-focused education increasingly important. However, these conversations must always remain age-appropriate, carefully guided, and centred on protecting children’s wellbeing and innocence.

Ending violence against children requires parents, schools, child protection organisations, and communities to work together responsibly.
What role should schools play in teaching body safety?

Many people still believe that if a child is not physically harmed, they are not being abused. But under South Africa’s Children’s Act 38 of 2005, exposing a child to domestic violence is recognised as a form of harm against a child.

When children witness violence, intimidation, fear, or abuse between adults in the home, the emotional and psychological impact can stay with them for years. Children may not always have the words for what they are experiencing but they carry it with them.

Protecting children means more than keeping them physically safe. It means creating homes where they do not have to live in fear, tension, or silence.

Today, on International Children’s Day, we are reminded that every child deserves to grow up safe, protected, heard, and free from violence. 💙

As we observe Child Protection Week 2026 under the theme “Working Together in Ending Violence Against Children,” we recognise that protecting children requires families, schools, communities, and organisations to work together to create safer spaces where children can thrive.

Too many children in South Africa still experience abuse, neglect, and fear behind closed doors. This cannot become normal.
Together, we can move beyond awareness and take action to help create a safer future for every child.

Research supported by child development organisations such as UNICEF highlights that children are more likely to feel emotionally secure when they experience:
- Consistent love and support
- Stable and safe home environments
- Adults who listen and believe them
- Protection from violence and intimidation
- Healthy routines and emotional care

Children who feel safe are more likely to thrive emotionally, socially, and academically.

Ending violence against children is not only about responding to abuse. It is also about creating homes, schools, and communities where children feel protected every day.
“A child who feels safe can learn, trust, and grow.” 💙

Too many children suffer in silence because adults are unsure how to act. Awareness matters but action protects children. 💙

In the event of child r**e or abuse in South Africa:
- Ensure the child is safe
- Report the incident to SAPS immediately
- Seek medical care and support services as soon as possible

Childline South Africa can be contacted on 116 for confidential reporting, counselling, and support.

Suspected child abuse can also be formally reported using Form 22 under the Children’s Act. Organisations such as Child Protection in Action provide guidance on how to complete and submit these reports correctly.
