Today, we commemorate Youth Day, honouring the courage and legacy of the young people of 16 June 1976.

Their legacy reminds us that expanding opportunity for young South Africans remains both an economic and social imperative. The long-term strength of our economy depends on whether young people can access meaningful pathways into work, entrepreneurship and enterprise.

Investing in young talent is an investment in long-term economic resilience. Supporting youth employment and entrepreneurship strengthens productivity, drives innovation and builds a more competitive and inclusive economy.

As business, we have an important role to play in creating opportunities that enable the next generation to participate fully in South Africa's growth story.

Business Unity South Africa is proud to be contributing to global discussions shaping the future of work at the International Labour Conference in Geneva.

Social Policy Deputy Chairperson Jahni de Villiers is participating in negotiations as a Titular member. Employers advocate for the incoming labour standard for the platform economy to be a principles-based framework that promotes fair working conditions while supporting innovation and flexibility.

Meanwhile, Head of Social Policy Sanelisiwe Jantjies is an Advisor on the Transformative Agenda for Gender Equality in the World of Work, critically looking at evidence based policies, while drawing on existing labour instruments that address structural inequalities and advance inclusive workplaces.

Through these engagements, BUSA is ensuring that the voice of South African business contributes to the development of balanced and forward-looking international labour standards.

The Conference brings together governments, employers and workers from across the globe to negotiate international labour standards and address emerging challenges in the world of work.
