Early Care Foundation training programmes in ECD practice equips beneficiaries with the necessary skills to provide a stimulating educational environment and meet the nutritional needs of the children in their care.

With more than seven million children under the age of five in South Africa, the need for access to structured, quality early childhood development is immense. Yet far too many children remain outside the ECD system.
In the ECF documentary, Head of Programmes Mario Claasen reflects on why stakeholder collaboration is essential to closing this gap. With ECD now firmly positioned as a national priority, the sector is moving away from competition and towards stronger collaboration, shared knowledge and collective action.
Because no single organisation can transform the sector alone. By working together, we can reach more children and give them the strong foundations they deserve.

We often celebrate the certification. But what happens before the certificate matters just as much.
Through ECF’s C.A.R.E Skills Programme, site heads and practitioners are equipped with practical knowledge to create safer, healthier and more stimulating environments for babies, toddlers and young children.
The programme covers the fundamentals that shape a child’s everyday experience in an ECD centre, including hygiene, nutrition, stimulation, age-appropriate development and the day-to-day management of the centre.

In a country as linguistically rich as South Africa, building strong literacy foundations means giving children opportunities to learn through the languages, stories and songs they know.
And those foundations matter. With 81% of South African Grade 4 learners unable to read for meaning, the work must begin long before a child enters formal schooling.
This Heritage Day, we celebrate the ECD practitioners helping children build language, vocabulary and a love of stories from their earliest years, while keeping them connected to their culture and identity.
Because preserving our heritage and building our children’s futures can begin in the very same place: the ECD classroom. 🇿🇦

Through home languages, familiar stories, songs and play, we celebrate the cultures that help children feel seen, valued and proud of who they are, while learning to appreciate others.

When ECD practitioners and families share their knowledge and traditions, they help keep our rich heritage alive for the next generation.

Some women use their voices not only to tell the story, but to help change it.

This Women’s Month, we celebrate Cathy Mohlahlana, award-winning broadcast journalist, long-standing advocate for early childhood development and Trustee of the Early Care Foundation.

Throughout her career, Cathy has helped South Africans understand the issues shaping our country. At ECF, she brings that same commitment to truth, visibility and meaningful public dialogue to a sector that deserves greater attention.

Her media and communication experience strengthens how we tell the story of ECD, advocate for its importance and amplify the voices of the women working every day to give children a stronger start.

Because when we tell these stories, we make the work visible. We help communities understand what is at stake. And we remind the country that investing in early childhood development is an investment in South Africa’s future.
