A generous act of support has further strengthened the impact of the in-school breakfast programme at Mtimba Primary School.

Inspired by the positive outcomes of the partnership between The Star Foundation and the Tiger Brands Foundation, a donor visited the school and witnessed first-hand the difference the programme is making in the lives of learners. From improved attendance and punctuality to enhanced concentration and participation in the classroom, the impact of a nutritious breakfast is evident every day.

Recognising the importance of creating an environment that supports the programme's success, the donor generously contributed shelving units to the school. These shelves will help improve the storage and organisation of food supplies, kitchen equipment, and programme materials, contributing to a more efficient, safe, and sustainable food preparation space.

This thoughtful donation reflects the power of collaboration and shared commitment to learner well-being. We extend our sincere gratitude to the donor for investing in the future of our learners and supporting a programme that continues to make a meaningful difference in school communities.

Today, in collaboration with the University of the Free State's Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Foundation hosted its annual Continuous Nutrition Education (CNE) Symposium under the theme, "From Plate to Population: Integrating Therapeutic Nutrition, Public Health Nutrition and Food Service Management."

The symposium brought together academics, researchers, practitioners and students to engage on critical issues shaping the future of nutrition in South Africa. The strong attendance reflects the growing interest in this important annual advocacy platform and the role nutrition plays in improving health outcomes across communities.

As the main sponsor, the Foundation was represented by Programme Lead, Mr Mokoena, who highlighted the Foundation's commitment to advancing food and nutrition security through impactful programmes in the Free State and across South Africa.

Delegates also gained valuable insights from leading experts in the field. Dr Lucia Meko, Head of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at UFS, delivered an informative presentation on Terminology Development in Dietetics, while Prof Hema Kesa, Director of the Food Evolution Research Laboratory (FERL) at the University of Johannesburg, shared findings from a baseline study examining the effect of an in-school breakfast programme on the nutritional status of learners in Mpumalanga.

Through partnerships, research and knowledge sharing, we continue to support initiatives that contribute to healthier communities and a stronger nutrition ecosystem.

KZN UPDATE

Today, we visited Hoffenthal Primary School to observe, monitor, and evaluate the in-school breakfast programme.

In observance of World Hunger Day 2026, under the theme “Nobody Should Go Hungry,” The Tiger Brands Foundation (TBF), through our in-school breakfast programme, continues to play a vital role in fighting hunger in South Africa.

Established in 2011, The Tiger Brands Foundation was created to combat food insecurity and malnutrition among vulnerable youth.

Its primary focus is the in-school breakfast programme, which provides thousands of children with hot, nutritious meals every school day.

Our in-school breakfast programme provides essential nutrients that support learners in their daily learning and physical activities. In addition, The Tiger Brands Foundation donates food hampers to families of learners from our beneficiary schools, helping to reduce hunger during school holidays.

KZN NEWS

Yesterday, we celebrated Africa Day at Woodford Primary School. Learners, with the support of educators, took part in activities that showcased their talents in celebration of this important day.

The day started with a warm and nutritious meal of Ace instant porridge, which kept learners energized throughout the ceremony.

Africa Day is celebrated in many countries across the African continent and by African diaspora communities.

It is a day that celebrates the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (now the African Union). It also honours the progress Africa has made in the fight against colonialism and apartheid, while reflecting on the challenges the continent still faces in a global environment.

The Department of Basic Education, the Tiger Brands Foundation (TBF), and the Food Evolution Research Centre (FERC) at the University of Johannesburg invite members of the media and interested stakeholders to attend a national webinar focused on improving food safety in South African schools.

Titled “Strengthening Food Safety Systems for Safe and Healthy School Food Environments in South Africa,” the webinar comes amid increased national attention on food safety standards in environments serving children and vulnerable communities.

The National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) provides meals to more than nine million learners daily, making schools one of the country’s most important food access points for children.

The webinar will bring together government officials, researchers, education stakeholders, and food safety specialists. Discussions will focus on risks within school food environments and ways to improve compliance, oversight, and safe food handling practices within the NSNP.

Speaking ahead of the webinar, Eugen Absolom, TBF Director, said:

“Food safety in schools is fundamental to protecting the health, dignity, and wellbeing of learners. Strengthening oversight, compliance, and collaboration across sectors is essential to ensuring every child has access to safe and responsibly prepared meals.”

The event aims to support stronger collaboration and practical action toward safer school nutrition environments across South Africa.

Media and interested stakeholders are encouraged to attend and engage with experts on this important issue.
