Food waste is not only a hunger issue.

It is a climate issue.

When food goes to landfill, the value already invested in growing, transporting, storing and preparing it is lost. At the same time, communities continue to face food insecurity.

Food rescue protects more than food. It protects value already created — and redirects it to communities where it can still nourish people with dignity.

This World Environment Day, we are reminded that planet health and people health are part of the same system.

For SA Harvest, food rescue is more than collecting surplus food. Most people think hunger is solved in the kitchen. But before food becomes a meal, it has to move. It needs a donor, a driver, a route, a warehouse, a safety process, a community partner and a system that can act before good food becomes waste. That is why SA Harvest attended the The Road Freight Association Convention 2026 - to keep making the case that trucks, drivers, fuel, warehousing and route planning are hunger interventions. What began as a mission to support girls’ education has grown into a broader commitment to uplifting vulnerable individuals and families through the provision of food, clothing, and school uniforms to those in need.
