Food waste is not only a hunger issue.

It is a climate issue.

When food goes to landfill, the value already invested in growing, transporting, storing and preparing it is lost. At the same time, communities continue to face food insecurity.

Food rescue protects more than food. It protects value already created — and redirects it to communities where it can still nourish people with dignity.

This World Environment Day, we are reminded that planet health and people health are part of the same system.

"Fuel costs are volatile and efficiency equals survival."

At the The Road Freight Association Convention, Liesl de Wet, Chairperson of the RFA Green Transport Working Group, highlighted why sustainability, efficiency and smarter logistics are now business essentials.

For SA Harvest, that message resonates strongly. Food rescue depends on the same things: data, collaboration, route optimisation, cold-chain capacity and reliable transport systems.

Read how stronger logistics can help reduce food waste, lower emissions and improve food access across South Africa.

A rescued meal does not begin on a plate.

It begins with a phone call, a collection window, a route plan, a driver, a warehouse team, a food safety check and a community partner ready to receive and redistribute with care.

This is the work people rarely see, but it is the work that makes food access possible.

At SA Harvest, logistics is not behind-the-scenes admin. It is the mechanism that turns surplus into access.

A meal doesn’t begin on a plate. It begins with a system that works. At the The Road Freight Association Road Convention 2026, a powerful message emerged: when transport costs, fuel prices and logistics shift, food access shifts too. For SA Harvest, food rescue is more than collecting surplus food. It’s about trucks on the road, cold chain infrastructure, warehouses, route planning and community partnerships working together to ensure good food reaches people before it goes to waste. Because when food moves better, people live better. Read the full story here: https://saharvest.org/newsletter-articles/when-the-economy-moves-food-access-moves-with-it/

Most people think hunger is solved in the kitchen. But before food becomes a meal, it has to move. It needs a donor, a driver, a route, a warehouse, a safety process, a community partner and a system that can act before good food becomes waste. That is why SA Harvest attended the The Road Freight Association Convention 2026 - to keep making the case that trucks, drivers, fuel, warehousing and route planning are hunger interventions. Because good food can only become access when the system can move it.

Since January 2023, Changing Lives Charity has been dedicated to empowering young girls at Kgapamadi Secondary School by providing free sanitary pads twice monthly, helping ensure that menstruation does not interrupt their education or limit their future opportunities. What began as a mission to support girls’ education has grown into a broader commitment to uplifting vulnerable individuals and families through the provision of food, clothing, and school uniforms to those in need. With a vision rooted in dignity and long-term impact, the organisation also hopes to address housing challenges within the community through the development of low-cost housing for underprivileged families. Changing Lives Charity believes that even the smallest acts of kindness can create powerful change, transforming lives, restoring hope, and building stronger communities for tomorrow. 💛 CommunityDevelopment
