Green Futures Start with You(th)! This June, we’re celebrating the power and potential of South Africa’s youth.

As we approach Youth Day, we’ll be shining a spotlight on green jobs in the recycling industry and the many ways young people can be part of building a cleaner, more sustainable future. The recycling economy is more than waste collection. It is an opportunity space filled with pathways into entrepreneurship, buy-back centres, recyclable material collection services, sorting, transporting, and community education. A circular economy ♻.

The future is centred around sustainability, and it starts with you(th).

It’s Africa Day, and we’re spotlighting another innovation turning waste into energy in South Africa ♻️⚡

Certain waste materials (such as paper and plastic that cannot be recycled) can be compacted into fuel pellets and used in cement factories to replace coal during cement production. This can help reduce carbon emissions and divert waste from landfill.

While this technology is still in its early stages in South Africa, it represents an important step towards a circular economy 🌍

As Africa Day approaches, we’re spotlighting innovative sustainability-focused research taking place in South Africa 💡

By funding PhD research at Stellenbosch University, Fibre Circle is supporting research exploring how wastepaper can be converted into BioEthanol ♻️🔬

15/05/2026

This Fibre Fact Friday, we’re focusing on innovation! Transforming what was once waste into something useful ♻️ Label backing paper doesn’t have to end up in landfill. Instead, it can be recycled into everyday products like tissue and insulation that help keep buildings warm and energy-efficient. It’s all part of keeping materials in the loop and building a smarter, more sustainable future 🌍.
Shout out to one of our members, Twinsaver for keeping it in the loop!

Fibre Circle is helping turn public employment into long-term opportunity. In partnership with DFFE and Lejweleputswa District Municipality, we are proud to support the expansion of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) into the first-of-its-kind EPWP Cleaning, Greening & Recycling Project.

Through this initiative, 550 EPWP participants will be trained to collect recyclable materials, understand the recycling value chain, and form cooperatives that can grow into sustainable waste businesses.

To help them begin safely and with dignity, Fibre Circle also gifted all participants with PPE as they start their journey as future Waste-preneurs. With support from our buy-back centre partners, GreenKid and Big Malaisha, this project is helping build cleaner communities, local livelihoods, and a stronger circular economy.
