In February, we traveled to Johannesburg, South Africa to meet fellow advocates, legal scholars and organizers from South Africa, Palestine, Namibia and Afghanistan. We shared experiences, engaged in strategy building and built critical solidarity across our communities. Learn more about what learned from each other’s struggles and from the lessons of apartheid. Today, the California Legislature officially recognized March as Afghan-American Heritage Month.

This effort was driven by community — led by our own at and — to ensure Afghan-American identity, culture, and contributions are recognized and celebrated. This work, including the draft of the resolution, has been a multi-year effort that took focused advocacy and continuous effort, fully pushed forward by our grassroots community members in conjunction with Afghan scholars.

We thank our partners who shows up in support including , Afghan-American Foundation, , and so many other leaders throughout California, including California Deputy State Controller Hasib Emran .controller.

We are deeply grateful to , the only Afghan American in elected office, for sponsoring this resolution and so passionately honoring our community, uplifting our voices and ensuring equitable policies in Sacramento.

At a time when our Afghan refugee community and our faith continue to face hateful rhetoric and bigoted attacks, we remain resilient. We stand tall.

The Afghan diaspora are an integral part of California and the country — and today, that impact is being recognized.

We mourn and are deeply saddened by the death of Mohammad Nazeer Paktyawal, a 41-year old father of six and an Afghan evacuee.

He is the 12th person to die in ICE custody this year and was able to survive the Taliban. He lasted about a day in an ICE jail, which speaks to the violence of this government agency.

His family is owed answers and demand answers. We echo their calls and demands.

Only the abolition of ICE will keep all of our communities safe from a rogue government agency.

We urge all to support the family by donating to their GoFundMe, via the link in our bio.

Ahead of a hearing by the Senate Judiciary Committee, we are submitting our statement for the record to accurately reflect the truth about our Afghan community. Our testimony reflects the debt that America owes to Afghans as well as testimony from deeply impacted and vulnerable community members that we are supporting.

These past few weeks have been deeply challenging and often traumatizing for our Afghan community. Our testimony is intended to let the record reflect the truth, rather than the bigoted lies shared by the Trump administration and members of Congress who demonize Afghans.

For the past few years, newly arrived Afghans have become pillars of their communities and neighborhoods across the nation. They deserve permanent protections, dignity and safety in the United States. Not what they’ve faced these past few weeks: fear, bans and detention.

A victory!

Last Thursday, we were overjoyed to reunite our beloved community members Ahmad* and Nasir* with their families after 2 harrowing weeks in ICE detention. We are deeply grateful to Human Rights First, Elora Mukherjee at Columbia Law and our members for their tireless work to free them.

We are continuing to provide extensive support to them and their families. If you’re inclined to support them, please donate via the link in bio.

What a beautiful turnout! Thank you to all our amazing and beautiful community members who came to show solidarity, wrapped gifts and donate SO many clothes and toys for our newly arrived Afghans. Our Afghan community is facing horrendous policies and escalating enforcement at the hands of ICE in the past few weeks. We dream of a world where borders don’t exist and ICE is abolished ✨

Special thank you to .nyc for organizing, for hosting us and to for the beautiful music.

Last Monday, we joined Councilmembers and countless grassroots organizations at City Hall to ensure protection of NYC’s immigrant communities.

These past few weeks, we’ve seen a cruel, bigoted and racist attack on Afghan refugees and immigrants seeking safety in the NYC and elsewhere around the country. We’ve seen unjust and illegal detentions of vulnerable Afghans just steps from City Hall.

We are grateful to those NYC City Council member who stand with us and we call on the rest of the council to resist any and all cooperation with ICE. New York must show the rest of the country a framework on how to resist the fascism of ICE and the Trump administration.

We’re in support of four bills in front of the council that would:
- limit city agencies from sharing information with ICE and allow those find in violation to be held to account
- Make city government hang signage informing them of their rights
- Disallow bad-faith use of E-Verify by employers
- Prohibit federal immigration enforcement from using NYC Department of Corrections property

Watch our testimony from this Monday, December 8th in front of the Council’s Immigration Committee.
