When Graham Howesโ€™ family experienced the devastating loss of someone they loved, the NSRIโ€™s efforts to find him left a lasting impression.

Now, that connection is helping create something that will carry Grahamโ€™s name forward.

Spirit of Graham Howes, a Gemini 5.5-metre rescue RIB being built for Station 16 Strandfontein, is expected to join the NSRI fleet later this year.

For a family whose lives were so closely connected to the ocean, it is a meaningful way to honour Grahamโ€™s memory: a rescue craft that will head out onto the water with a purpose, helping bring others safely home.

NSRI Richards Bay volunteer crew assisted two foreign sailing yachts over Sunday and Monday. A British couple needed help getting their yacht across a shallow channel to the Zululand Yacht Club in strong winds, and a New Zealand couple were towed to safe moorings after their yachtโ€™s motor failed in the harbour channel. Both crews and their yachts reached safety without incident.

Twenty-four people. Ten countries. One shared goal: preventing drowning.

In September, lifesaving leaders from around the world came together at NSRI headquarters in Cape Town for the RNLIโ€™s Leaders in Lifesaving course, co-hosted with the NSRI for the first time.

The week brought together organisations facing different challenges, but many of the same questions: how can we strengthen leadership, share knowledge and find better ways to prevent drowning?

Because the work to save lives does not stop at borders.

Eight years ago, *Alick Rennie* became the first of a new generation of Offshore Rescue Craft to join the NSRI fleet.

Today, eight ORCs have been built, with the programme now complete.

The journey represents a significant investment in the future of maritime rescue, giving NSRI crews vessels designed to travel further offshore, operate in challenging conditions, and support increasingly demanding rescue operations.

From the first vessel to the last, the programme has built the capability needed to serve South Africaโ€™s waters for decades to come.

What an incredible achievement for **Station 44!** ๐Ÿšจ๐ŸŒŠ

We are extremely proud to announce that Station 44 has been awarded a Station Excellence Award for 2025 for the second year in a row.

This award is a reflection of the dedication, commitment and countless hours put in by our entire crew. From training and maintenance to call-outs, fundraising, community involvement and everything that happens behind the scenes โ€” it takes a team to keep a rescue station operating at its best.

Every crew member who gives their time, every family who supports them, every volunteer who helps behind the scenes and every person who contributes to our station has played a part in this achievement. This one belongs to all of us.
A massive congratulations to our entire Station 44 crew. You have made us incredibly proud!

Congratulations to Terrence and Ryan on successfully completing their Swift Water Rescue Course! ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ’ช

This is one of the most technically demanding rescue courses out there. It doesn't just test your physical strengthโ€”it pushes your mental resilience to the limit. With freezing water, long hours, relentless currents, and constant problem-solving, every moment challenges both body and mind.

Despite the icy conditions and demanding training, you both persevered with determination and professionalism, making us incredibly proud.

Well done on this outstanding achievement. Wear those qualifications with prideโ€”they've been well earned. Stay safe, and we look forward to seeing those skills put to good use when they matter most..

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NSRI โ€“ STATION 44, St Helena Bay

NSRI โ€“ St Helena Bay โ€“ Sunday, 17 May. A fisherman is sadly deceased:

Devon Wild, NSRI St Helena Bay station commander, said:

At 08h52, Friday, 15 May, NSRI St Helena Bay duty crew were activated following an urgent request for medical assistance for a medical emergency onboard a fishing vessel at sea offshore of St Helena Bay and the vessel heading towards St Helena Bay. The crew of the vessel reporting CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) efforts in progress on their 63 year old Chief of the vessel, who is from Hout Bay.

Our NSRI duty crew responded to our NSRI St Helena Bay station 44 rescue base where we launched the NSRI rescue craft Rotary Onwards.

WC Government Health EMS and West Coast Medical Rescue were alerted and responded to St Helena Bay Harbour.

We rendezvoused with the vessel 10 nautical miles offshore where we found the crew of the fishing vessel performing CPR on the man.

NSRI medics were transferred onto the vessel and continued with CPR on the man on the vessel that was escorted by our rescue craft to St Helena Bay Harbour where paramedics boarded the vessel but sadly the man was declared deceased by paramedics.

Police attended at the scene - all indications are that sadly the cause of death may have been natural.

The body of the man was taken into the care of funeral services.

Condolences are conveyed to family, friends and colleagues, of the deceased man.
