South African Social Workers’ Experiences of Client Violence

The issue of social worker safety begins to resurface with increasing vigor. Who is responsible for the safety of social workers while they are providing for society’s vulnerable, disadvantaged, and impoverished?

According to studies physical violence, emotional abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, and destruction of property are all reported to unfold at some point throughout the career of a typical social worker. This is also observed in South Africa, where social workers frequently discuss similar incidents at meetings, on social media, and on other platforms. Pretorius (2021) found a positive correlation with large effect sizes between perceived risk in-office interviews and during visits.

The primary mission of the social work profession, according to the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP), is to improve human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with special attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, disadvantaged, and impoverished.

Some amazing advice to everyone today, including all the kids and young adults starting their 2024 academic year!

Checklists are fantastic, and if you start your first list today here are some bullet points you need to remember:

► You are good enough
► You work hard to achieve your targets
► Good things come your way
► Every day is a fresh start for something new
► You will stand up stronger if you fall, it is part of growing
► You can do anything if you are willing to try

With all the excitement in the air about schools starting for the 2024 academic year, there are also the nerves that come with your child going to school for the first time!

It is hard for them, but sometimes hard for us too if we don’t know how to handle it.

Here are 3 tips for a child who is nervous about school!

1. NORMALISE
“Are you feeling scared? That makes sense, I know it can be really scary doing new things.”
“I get scared doing new things too.”
Tell them a story about things you have been scared of or that you still get scared of.
Normalising makes us feel like we are not alone and not being weird.

2. CLING HARDER
Your child might cling to you, and you might be tempted to peel them off you and keep them at arm’s length.
Instead, stop for a moment and hug your child even tighter. Reassure them that you love him/her and that you trust the teacher/school to take good care of him/her. If you are squeezing and hugging for a while, he/she can feel more secure. Which in return will set them at ease and make the separation easier.

3. FOCUS ON YOUR OWN CHILD
You will be aware of other children who seem to adapt easily without tears or screaming. You might compare yourself or worry about what others might think.
STOP doing that!
Your child being scared or upset is not a failure for you or for them. It is just how they feel.
Validate your child’s feelings, set them at ease that you will pick them up after work, and tell them you always love them no matter what.

The more secure your child feels the easier it will get.
