๐Ÿงต A new skill, built on years of talent! ๐Ÿ‘’

Mama Yvonne du Preez from Upington recently attended a specialised hat-making course through the South African School of Hat Making, and it seems hat making and Mama Yvonne fit together like needle and thread!

Already a highly skilled and accomplished seamstress, Mama Yvonne quickly embraced the techniques and creativity involved in hat making, adding another valuable skill to her impressive repertoire.

For Mama Yvonne, this is about more than learning something new. It gives her an opportunity to expand the products and services she can offer within her community, opening the door to new income-generating possibilities while continuing to share her skills with others.

This is what we love to see at Clover Mama Afrika: existing talent strengthened, new opportunities created, and skills that can keep growing long after the training ends. ๐Ÿ’™

After attending the ๐‚๐ฅ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ ๐Œ๐š๐ฆ๐š ๐€๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ข๐ค๐š ๐€ ๐๐ข๐ง๐œ๐ก ๐Ž๐Ÿ ๐’๐ฉ๐ข๐œ๐ž ๐œ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐œ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ž, Mama Sipiwe from Hazyview has already begun transferring her newly acquired knowledge to young people in her community.

From exploring the rich flavours and purpose of traditional curry spices, to preparing soft, homemade naan bread from scratch, the workshop was filled with hands-on learning, laughter and the confidence that comes from discovering new skills.

Every recipe taught is more than just a meal. Itโ€™s an ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ to create an ๐ข๐ง๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž , ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ž our rich culinary ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐š๐ ๐ž and ๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ข๐ซ๐ž the next generation.

One of the greatest rewards of the ๐‚๐ฅ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ ๐Œ๐š๐ฆ๐š ๐€๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ข๐ค๐š programme is seeing the ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ญ continue long after the training has ended.

After attending our ๐‚๐š๐ค๐ž ๐๐š๐ค๐ข๐ง๐  & ๐ƒ๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  Workshop last year, ๐Œ๐š๐ฆ๐š ๐’๐ข๐ฉ๐ข๐ฐ๐ž from ๐‡๐š๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฏ๐ข๐ž๐ฐ has continued to put her new skills into practice, creating beautiful cakes and cupcakes for special occasions, generating an ๐ข๐ง๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž, and inspiring others in her community to do the same.

This is what ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ง๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž empowerment looks like. A ๐ฌ๐ค๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ becomes an ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ. An ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ becomes an ๐ข๐ง๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž. And an ๐ข๐ง๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž creates ๐ก๐จ๐ฉ๐ž, ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐Ÿ๐ข๐๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž and the chance to ๐ญ๐ž๐š๐œ๐ก someone else.

Who knew choosing the best ๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐‚๐ก๐ข๐œ๐ค๐ž๐ง would be this difficult? ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ›

After ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž incredible days of ๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ , ๐ฅ๐š๐ฎ๐ ๐ก๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  traditions, ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘ ๐‚๐ฅ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ ๐Œ๐š๐ฆ๐š ๐€๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ข๐ค๐š ๐Œ๐š๐ฆ๐š๐ฌ put their new skills to the test in a friendly Butter Chicken ๐‚๐จ๐จ๐ค-๐Ž๐Ÿ๐Ÿ. From perfectly balanced spices to rich, flavourful sauces, every dish reflected the ๐ฉ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง, creativity and confidence they had built throughout the course.

Our judges certainly had the toughest job of the day, tasting all 13 ๐๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐œ๐ข๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ entries! ๐Ÿคญ

The smiles, laughter and celebration at graduation remind us that this course was about so much more than cooking. It was about ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐š๐ ๐ž, building ๐ฉ๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐ค๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฌ, creating ๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž ๐ข๐ง๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž opportunities, and ๐ž๐ฆ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฐ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  our Mamas to return home and teach others.

The kitchen became a classroom this week as 1๏ธโƒฃ3๏ธโƒฃ ๐‚๐ฅ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ ๐Œ๐š๐ฆ๐š ๐€๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ข๐ค๐š ๐Œ๐š๐ฆ๐š๐ฌ from across South Africa gathered in Gauteng for a very special ๐“๐ซ๐š๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ Traditional South African ๐ˆ๐ง๐๐ข๐š๐ง ๐‚๐ฎ๐ซ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐‚๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ž.

Presented in partnership with Clover South Africa โ€˜s ๐‹๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ง๐ข๐ง๐  & ๐ƒ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ญ๐ž๐š๐ฆ, this course is about so much more than preparing delicious meals.

Itโ€™s about ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐š๐ ๐ž, celebrating the rich ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ of South African Indian cuisine, and ๐ž๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐  our Mamas with practical skills they can use to generate ๐ข๐ง๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž and share with others in their communities.

๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ ๐Ÿ was all about ๐›๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ง๐  the foundation. From ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ง๐๐ข๐ง๐  the unique role of ๐š๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐œ ingredients and ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ข๐œ๐ž๐ฌ to learning the secrets behind creating authentic curry bases, our Mamas discovered that every ingredient tells a story.

Because at ๐‚๐ฅ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ ๐Œ๐š๐ฆ๐š ๐€๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ข๐ค๐š, we believe:

Clover Mama Afrika ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฎ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜† opened her heart and her community space to the children around her, creating a ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—ณ๐—ฒ and welcoming environment filled with laughter, music, warm meals, treats and plenty of fun.

For many children, ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€ like these mean so much more than just a day of entertainment. They provide a sense of ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด, ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป and ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ โ€” reminding every child that they are seen, valued and ๐—นโค๏ธ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ.

This week, our ๐‚๐ฅ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ ๐Œ๐š๐ฆ๐š ๐€๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ข๐ค๐š ๐Œ๐š๐ฆ๐š๐ฌ had the privilege of participating in a ๐‡๐š๐ญ ๐Œ๐š๐ค๐ข๐ง๐  ๐‚๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ž in collaboration with the S A School of Hat making South African School of Hat Making at the beautiful Pure Joy Guest Lodge in Kameeldrift, Gauteng.

Hat making was identified as a skill with tremendous potential - creating opportunities for ๐ข๐ง๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž generation, ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐ž๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ฉ, ๐ฌ๐ค๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ฌ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ, and ๐œ๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐ž๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง within their communities. As always, the goal is not only to learn a skill, but to earn from it and teach it to others.

Module 4 focused on ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ซ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ, and we could not be prouder of the beautiful garments created during the ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ . The video captures the joy and confidence of the trainees as they model their finished shirts โ€” each stitch representing growth, skill, and empowerment. ๐ŸŒธ

A special moment in the video is ๐Œ๐š๐ฆ๐š ๐€๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ž from Lejwe La Thuso Foundation in Soweto, sharing the ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ญ this training is having, not only on the Mamas themselves, but also on the beneficiaries they ๐™ช๐™ฅ๐™ก๐™ž๐™›๐™ฉ daily in their communities. One of Mama Angieโ€™s own trainees is attending the course. โค๏ธ
