FEDUSA: The Federation of Unions of South Africa

FEDUSA: The Federation of Unions of South Africa FEDUSA seeks to promote the rights and wellbeing of workers all across South Africa.

FEDUSA advocates for Decent Work for all with a key focus on the eradication of corruption and the drastic improvement of education. FEDUSA is the largest politically non-aligned trade union federation in South Africa and represents a diverse membership from a variety of sectors in industry. Its members included technicians, administrative employees, pilots, flight engineers, general assistants, n

urses, doctors, teachers and other skilled and semi – skilled employees from both the public and private sector of the economy. FEDUSA was established on 1 April 1997 through the amalgamation of two federations, namely the Federation of South African Labour Unions (FEDSAL) and Federation of Organisations Representing Civil Employees (FORCE). Today, FEDUSA and its affiliated trade unions are continually striving to fulfill their mandate of ensuring social justice through decent work. FEDUSA is able to play a major role in South African labour relations and the formulation of labour policy and is ever committed to defending the rights of workers. On an international level FEDUSA maintains good relations with many trade union federations in other countries and communicates regularly through a number of international forums to exchange information, skills and strategies in the attempt to ultimately create a better life for all through the agenda for decent work. Through its participation in the International Labour Organisation (ILO), International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and the Trade Union Advisory Committee (TUAC) to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) FEDUSA is able to meaningfully contribute to the promotion of workers’ rights at an international level while simultaneously translating this international experience into domestic development.

FEDUSA encourages all its members to switch off their lights during Earth Hour, this Saturday 31 March 2012. This global campaign urges individuals to switch off their lights between 20h00 and 21h00 every year on the last Saturday of March, in a bit to save electricity and draw attention to the serious consequences of climate change and that depleting financial resources will affect everyone.

Learn how easy it is to save electricity. You’ll find it’s not about sacrificing, but rather think about the next guy. Lights burning when you don’t need them. TVs playing when you aren’t watching them. Full kettles boiling when it’s just you for tea. Because the power we sav...

FEDUSA is very disappointed that the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to leave the repo rate unchanged. This decision represents another missed opportunity to cut interest rates to stimulate consumer spending and economic growth.

FEDUSA is highly displeased with Metrorail’s proposed 27% increase in passenger fares. Although there had been no increases in fares from 2003 to 2010, Metrorail's proposed 27% increase for 2012 combined with its 33% increase in 2011, equates to a staggering 60% rise in fares in the last two years.

FEDUSA is appalled by the collusive and anti-competitive conduct of South African Airways (SAA). FEDUSA welcomes the Competition Commission’s investigation regarding international air cargo surcharges and domestic route prices and pricing strategies during the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Unfortunately, taxpayers and consumers will probably land up paying the R19 million settlement fee.

FEDUSA is very concerned with the rapid escalating cost of living. The Monetary Policy Committee’s (MPC) announcement tomorrow, regarding interest rates, must take into account the effects the implementation of the Gauteng Open Toll Road System (GTRS), rising administered prices and increased petrol prices will have on the South African worker.

FEDUSA is proud to be part of the development of a single integrated strategy for Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and Tuberculosis (TB). On World Tuberculosis Day, tomorrow the 24 March 2012, FEDUSA stands alongside its partners in the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) in noting the high HIV and TB co-infection rate in our country, the severity of the affect of TB in our communities and the need to address these diseases head on.

FEDUSA noted the tabling of the latest labour law amendment bills at Parliament yesterday. FEDUSA is satisfied with the process followed at the NEDLAC and we are overly pleased with the inclusion of its proposals around regulation of labour brokers and temporary work in general.

On International Water Day, FEDUSA is reminded of the importance of freshwater and the need to ensure the sustainable management of our freshwater resources and that the very serious and worsening problem of acid mine drainage (AMD) is yet to be adequately addressed by Government.

It is World Water Day today, let's work together to save water today and everyday after

There are 7 billion people to feed on the planet today and another 2 billion are expected to join by 2050. Statistics say that each of us drinks from 2 to 4 litres of water every day, however most of the water we ‘drink’ is embedded in the food we eat: producing 1 kilo of beef for example consumes 1...

FEDUSA is cautiously optimistic regarding South Africa’s economic outlook despite the uncertainty in the global economy, as put forward by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan during his Budget Speech. However, concerns include unemployment, lacking public expenditure, the road tolling, lacking capacity of public servants, as well as fraud and corruption.
