Meet Joel Baraka from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a member of our Class of 2015.

Growing up in Kyangwali Refugee Camp in western Uganda, Joel transformed his lived experience into a powerful force for educational change. As the founder of My Home Stars, he created 5 STA Z, an innovative board game that reimagines the Ugandan curriculum through play, making learning more engaging, accessible, and inclusive.

Through his work, Joel has distributed more than 2,000 games, reaching over 8,000 learners in refugee camps and primary schools across Uganda. By combining education, creativity, and social impact, he is helping young people discover the joy of learning while expanding access to quality education for underserved communities.

IndiGenius, a student enterprise under ALA’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Program, brought together over 35 students for an evening exploring game-based learning through virtual reality experiences, puzzle-solving, speed-running, and collaborative competition.

Focused on improving K–12 education in South Africa, IndiGenius uses game-based education to develop often-overlooked cognitive skills such as critical thinking, processing speed, working memory, and spatial reasoning.

The event also contributed to the expansion of IndiRecords, the enterprise’s digital achievement and leaderboard platform, while creating space for entertainment, creativity, and community.

We recently celebrated Africa Day on campus🌍

Organised by ALA’s African Studies Department, Africa Day brought together first-year students to present policy briefs addressing some of the continent’s most pressing challenges across the arts, education, governance, health, environment, and infrastructure.

The celebration concluded with an awards ceremony, where the student-led Africa Day Committee recognised the policy briefs that demonstrated exceptional insight, innovation, and impact.

Before our Year 2 students walk across the stage next week, we asked them to “sign out” by leaving one final note.

Some wrote thank yous. Some left advice. Some captured a memory, a lesson, or a feeling they want to carry with them.

Together, these notes offer a small glimpse into what this moment means: the end of one chapter, the beginning of another, and a community that has shaped them in ways they will take into the world.

ALA alumnus Ayotomiwa Akinyele ’17 from Nigeria has created a meaningful new way to celebrate and reconnect with Africa Day.

Inspired by his own search for community while living away from home, Ayotomiwa built africaday.xyz, an interactive site that helps users explore different aspects of African culture, from natural wonders and culinary traditions to influential figures across the continent.

For Ayotomiwa, the project was also shaped by his memories of Africa Day at ALA, where the community came together through presentations, performances, food, and celebration. He also drew inspiration from ALA’s “Do Something Cool” tradition, where students built, learned, or taught something meaningful and shared it with the community.

The site offers a fun and accessible way to celebrate African culture, while showing how technology, including AI, can help us connect more deeply with each other, our histories, and the continent.

As part of ALA’s University Guidance process, our students have the opportunity to engage directly with universities from around the world. This enables them to explore the many pathways available to them after ALA!

We are grateful to have recently welcomed Bocconi University, Central University of Technology, City University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Education University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Saint Mary’s University, the University of Fort Hare, and the University of Johannesburg to campus.
