Passing the leadership baton.

As Champions for Change grows stronger and builds up its two pillars of operation, Gwen, our founder, continues to lead our Community Outreach programmes (pillar2) and public relations, with her trademark care and compassion. At the same time, Meryl Thomas takes the lead as Managing Director, and she and Miriam Mhazo continue focusing on Child Protection and Safeguarding programmes in schools (Pillar 1). Meryl also ensures smooth operations continue to underpin the two programmes.
Together, this team is carrying Gwen’s vision forward, expanding our reach, and keeping hope alive for survivors and children across our communities.
💙 Hope continues!

How sound is our school?
It’s not just about walls and timetables, but about the spaces that nurture reflection, creativity, and growth.
What’s missing in our school that makes us pause?
what gaps remind us of the work still to be done?

“I wish more adults understood that the signs aren’t always obvious.”

For some children, the signs of abuse don’t look like what we expect.

“I wasn’t acting out. I wasn’t visibly struggling. I was actually the opposite… a people pleaser. The ‘good girl.’ Always smiling. Always making sure everyone else was comfortable.”

Children respond to abuse in different ways—and sometimes, the signs are easy to miss.

We must create safe spaces where survivors are heard, seen, and supported. Their voices are critical to this work and help us better protect children.

What if the soul of our education system isn't just in the students or the curriculum, but in the very hands that guide those young minds every day? Teachers are the architects of not only knowledge but of the emotional and intellectual landscapes where students grow. When we ask ourselves what makes a school truly exceptional, we must look beyond test scores and trophies, and instead focus on the conditions that allow teachers to thrive—mentally, emotionally, and professionally. 🌱

Consider the ripple effect: a teacher supported, inspired, and valued creates classrooms where curiosity blooms and resilience is nurtured. It’s a profound cycle of growth that begins with investing in educators as whole people, not just as conveyors of content. The workplace culture, resources, respect, and opportunities for development craft the invisible scaffolding that holds up the educational experience. What if we shifted our collective energy to build these foundations first?

This reflection invites us to challenge conventional thinking about educational success. How might our schools transform if we prioritized teachers’ well-being and growth equally with student outcomes? How does this interconnectedness shape the future of learning? Let’s spark a conversation that honors the complexity and potential within our classrooms—where every educator’s journey enriches the lives of many. Share your thoughts and stories as we explore what it truly means to cultivate thriving communities in education. 🍎✨

Very interesting, happier children? Willing to read and learn more independently? Any other countries practicing this method?

Celebrating SACE Endorsement
- Please Share with Teachers & Principals

We are delighted to share that SACE has once again endorsed C4C's updated "Our Duty to Care" safeguarding series until 2029 - now carrying 20 CPD points (10 points each for Course 1 and 2).

This is a significant leap from the 5 CPD points previously awarded, and it places Champions for Change NPC firmly among South Africa’s solid providers of quality training in Child Protection and Safeguarding in schools.

In addition, two new short courses - Speaking the Languages of Children and The 4 Rs of Empowering Children -
have each been endorsed with 5 CPD points. Together, these offerings give teachers, principals, interns, and university student teachers practical tools to make schools safer, and classrooms more nurturing spaces.

We invite you to share this important information with principals, teachers, and colleagues in your networks. With 20 CPD points out of the 150 CPD points required in a three‑year cycle for teachers, our courses provide a meaningful contribution to the professional development cycle, while strengthening safeguarding practices across schools.
