More than 1,400 people drown in South Africa every year and over half are young children.

This Easter, strong tides and rough currents are expected, increasing the risk at beaches, rivers and dams.

Earlier this year, the NSRI responded to 30 emergencies in just 8 days, where 10 people lost their lives.

Drowning often happens quickly and silently, especially among children.

Experts share practical tips for staying safe at the ocean, rivers, dams and around children this Easter.

Is 4km/h enough to change your mind?

This week, ChildSafe South Africa’s Executive Director, Zaitoon Rabaney, joined Professor Anthony Figaji and the African Brain Child (ABC) team for the launch of the "Seatbelt Convincer" at the UCT Neuroscience Institute in partnership with the Cape Town Science Centre

The simulator operates at just 4km/h, yet the impact is a sobering wake-up call.

If 4km/h feels significant, imagine the forces at 60km/h or 120km/h.

African Brain Child reports only 4 out of every 100 children admitted to ICU with severe head injuries were wearing a seatbelt.

Road traffic accidents are the leading cause of death and disability for healthy children over five.

There is no doubt that buckling up all passengers in a vehicle, including having children properly restrained, is a life-saving requirement.
