Over the past weeks the Jobs for Nature teams in Port Nolloth have been working across the community to tackle waste at the source. Illegal dumping sites, public spaces, schools, coastal areas and the Bird Park have all been cleared, with large amounts of household waste, building rubble and organic waste sorted and properly disposed of.

Recycling has been a big part of the work too. Plastic bottles are being collected and reused to create recycling bins and garden structures, while organic waste is being turned into compost and liquid fertiliser for local gardening initiatives. Earlier this month the teams also took part in a waste management training session, building on their skills in waste sorting, recycling.

Through these activities, the programme is not only improving environmental conditions but also contributing to a culture of recycling and responsible waste management in Port Nolloth. 🌍♻️

Getting clean water to a community is not just about restoring a spring. It is also about knowing whether the water is actually safe to drink.💧

After rehabilitating the Mdeni 1, Mdeni 2, and Msukeni springs in the Eastern Cape, we have carried out water quality testing for the first time. This gives us a baseline and shows whether the water is safe for people to use. Even though the springs were restored to improve access, no testing happened immediately afterwards. Now, we finally have a full picture of the quality of water these sources are producing.

The testing looks at key factors for domestic use, including E. coli, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium nitrogen, pH, phosphate, hardness, sulphate, iron, and manganese. These measurements help us understand both the microbiological and chemical condition of the water.

Understanding what is in the water is essential. It ensures communities can drink safely and helps guide any further steps to protect this essential resource.
