Breede River Hospice Breede River Hospice in Robertson is a beacon of care and support to patients suffering life threatening and life limiting illnesses.

Breede River Hospice in Robertson cares for patients with life threatening illnesses throughout the Langeberg sub-district - including the towns and communities of Robertson, Nqkubela, Ashton, Bonnievale, Zolani, Montagu and McGregor and the entire surrounding area. We provide holistic, home based Palliative Care to patients who, most commonly, are diagnosed with Cancer, HIV/Aids, chronic illnesses and Tuberculosis. On average we care for 370 patients at any given time. Our care is provided at the home of the patient by a team of trained and passionate professionals and wonderful volunteers. This team consists of a doctor, social workers, spiritual counsellor, care-givers, bereavement volunteers and care-giver volunteers. We are one of 24 member hospices, of a total of 189 nationally, to have been awarded 5-star Certification from our national umbrella body, The Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa (HPCA). Each member hospice is responsible for raising its own funds and giving care appropriate to their communities.

What happens at Breede River Hospice Daycare? Here's a glimpse into their day...

The day started with a very special and respectful devotion led by one of the patients herself. She read 1 Corinthians 13 in memory of a late daycare group member who recently passed away.

They did two activities:
Hand-Eye Coordination
Where they focused on concentration, colour recognition, and coordination. The patients had to use their left index finger to point to a coloured dot, and with their right hand do the action that corresponded to that colour. They all participated so well.

The "Cup" Game
This was the highlight! They tested listening skills and reflexes. When the facilitator said "head" they had to touch their head, "shoulders" - touch their shoulders, and when she said "CUP" they had to see who grabs the cup first! It created a lot of excitement and laughter - they enjoyed it so much.
Afterwards they enjoyed cheese and tomato sandwiches, and each received a piece of milk tart.

It was a small group but very engaged. The atmosphere was warm, supportive and full of joy, despite the sad remembrance at the start. All 4 patients participated actively and left uplifted and with smiles on their faces.

At Breede River Hospice, Daycare is not just about activities - it is about giving patients a moment to forget about their illness, to laugh again, to belong, and to know they are not alone.

A Letter to South African Families on World Alzheimer’s Day

Today, 21 September, we pause to recognize World Alzheimer’s Day. But more than that, we pause to recognize you, the families, the caregivers, the children, the spouses, and the friends who walk this road every single day.

In South Africa, we have a saying: "Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu", "A person is a person through other people." We are carried by our communities, our stories, and our connections. And for those living with dementia, that connection is everything.

Yes, this journey is hard. There are days of confusion, exhaustion, and heartache. But if we look closely, if we really pay attention, there are also little treasures.

A sudden burst of laughter at an old joke.

A familiar melody that brings a distant look back into focus.

A quiet afternoon spent watching the birds outside the window.

A hand that reaches out, not knowing your name, but knowing you are safe.

These are the moments that dementia cannot steal. These are the moments that remind us that love lives on, long after memory fades.

Today, we want to fill this space with light.

If you have a loved one living with dementia, we invite you to share a beautiful moment (big or small) in the comments below. Maybe it was a word they spoke that surprised you, a song that made them smile, or simply a peaceful silence that said everything.

Your story might be the very thing another family needs to read today. It might give them hope. It might make them laugh. It might remind them that they are not alone on this journey.
