International Khoikhoi Languages Week 2025

The intention of International Khoikhoi Languages Week is for us to celebrate and acknowledge who we are as Khoikhoi people — the first and longest-standing peoples of this land.

This week was a space for recognising our rights as First Nation Khoikhoi people, and for affirming our history, our languages, our culture, our heritage, and our continued existence in a country, and a world, that has too often tried to erase or forget us.

We created this space to speak back to our own story.
To remember ourselves.
To reclaim what was silenced.
To remind one another — and the world — that we are still here.

Our languages live in our bodies.
Our culture lives in our memory and practice.
Our identity lives in how we show up, together.

We gather every year from 1 to 7 December, and we invite you to continue walking with us in this annual celebration.

In 2026, we will proudly mark our 5th Annual International Khoikhoi Languages Week, and we invite you to be part of our collective journey forward.
This is our voice.
This is our history.
This is us — Khoikhoi.

This year’s International Khoikhoi Languages Week was made possible through the support of our sponsors and partners:
Pereira and Amaza Fishing, Assitej South Africa, the Social Employment Fund, Northern Cape Arts and Culture Council, Richtersveld Municipality, Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, Lower Orange River Diamonds, and Richtersveldt Secure.

International Khoikhoi Languages Week 2025

The theme of this year’s International Khoikhoi Languages Week 2025, presented by Nama Khoi Productions, asked a powerful question:
Tari ta tita/ Who am I? / Wie is ek?

This question invited audiences to reflect on who we are, where we come from, and where we are headed as a Khoi nation.

Guiding us on this journey were a vibrant group of artists, dance groups, DJs, and performers who used music, movement, rhythm, and performance to help us remember and reclaim our identity.

Some of the artists and groups who contributed to this journey include:
The Voice of Warmbad, Richtersveld Vastrappers, Richtersveld Stoftrap Dansers, BienoTheDJ, DJ Tman, DJ Nalla, Candice, Real Sounds and many more.
Each performance added a unique voice to the celebration, creating moments of joy, reflection, pride, and unity throughout the week.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the artists, performers, DJs, dancers, and the Sanddrift community, whose energy, participation, and support made this year’s International Khoikhoi Languages Week a meaningful, powerful, and unforgettable celebration of Khoi identity, culture, and resilience.

International Khoikhoi Languages Week 2025

From 1 to 7 December 2025, Nama Khoi Productions proudly celebrated a week-long International Khoikhoi Languages Week in Sanddrift, Richtersveld.

This year’s programme featured a powerful series of performance art works, inspired by the 2025 theme:
“Tari ta tita” – Who am I? / Wie is ek?

The cast of Nama Khoi Productions brought the festival to life by moving through the streets of Sanddrift, transforming everyday spaces into living stages. At different corners of the community, audiences encountered thought-provoking performances that invited reflection, dialogue, and participation.

Highlights included:
Jayden Cloete, who invited festivalgoers to write a song expressing Khoi pride
Diansca Obies, who challenged the community to reflect on responsibility and reminded us that our future is in our own hands
Andels Joseph, who questioned the meaning of church, reminding us that it should not be a space for political agendas
Luwayden De Klerk, who created an interactive performance addressing land loss, and how we sometimes give it away knowingly and unknowingly
Jody-Ann Cloete, whose work explored body politics and body positivity
Laverne Slander, who addressed alcohol abuse and the stigma surrounding it, while pointing to the deeper, often ignored causes
Janica Bezuidenhout, who powerfully confronted the reality of gender-based violence

Through movement, voice, and presence, these performances asked difficult questions and opened space for healing, accountability, and self-reflection.

This year’s International Khoikhoi Languages Week was made possible by the support of our sponsors and partners:
Pereira and Amaza Fishing, Assitej South Africa, the Social Employment Fund, Northern Cape Arts and Culture Council, Richtersveld Municipality, Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, Lower Orange River Diamonds, and Richtersveldt Secure.

Games played included:
Driestokkies | Dibeke | Ncuva | Morabaraba

Honouring the past, celebrating the present, and passing it on to the next generation.

|Naeb/ Naelstring is National Arts Festival Makhanda

|Naeb/ Naelstring is a powerful theatrical journey that explores the struggle for identity, belonging, and memory within the Nama community of the Richtersveld. At the heart of the story is Badas, a young woman searching for her missing child—an echo of a people searching for their lost sense of self. Guided by , a wise and ancient midwife, the play unearths the deep scars left by colonisation, land dispossession, and cultural erasure.

Blending myth, memory, and ancestral wisdom, |Naeb/ Naelstring invites audiences into a world where history lives in the body and voice of its people. Through poetic storytelling, powerful imagery, and emotional resonance, the play becomes a cry for restoration—a call to remember who we are when everything has tried to make us forget.

This is a story about reclaiming what was stolen, healing what was silenced, and reconnecting the umbilical cord between past and present. Bold, intimate, and deeply human, |Naeb/ Naelstring is a celebration of cultural survival and the unbreakable thread of identity.

Thank you to all our sponsors, this show is made possible by National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC)
