Roselands Trust: Butterfly Project

Roselands Trust: Butterfly Project Providing a memorable experience for life skills and education. The children are each given a journal, and are encouraged to express their thoughts.

Roselands Trust, a Section 18A, non-profit registered organisation (NPO: 056-016-NPO, PBO: 930020334) was formed in 2006 to raise funds to sponsor vulnerable children in poverty and abuse- stricken communities in and around Richmond KZN. Since 2007, 60 Grade 6 children from six schools in the Richmond area have been chosen annually to be a part of The Butterfly Project. This intense 3 week program

me held at Roselands Outdoor Centre focuses on 3 main areas:
• Building self- esteem
• Environmental awareness
• Leadership and Group Dynamics

Throughout the Butterfly Project, care is taken to ensure that all children understand the concepts discussed in both English and their home language. This provides a way to note their personal progress. Many a breakthrough has been seen from the writing of the children. Counselling by qualified psychologists and social workers is available, monitoring by both Roselands and school staff is recorded. Much time and effort is put into building relationships based on trust with each child.

Its been some time since we posted, but thats not to say we havent been BUSY!
We will try and catch up with our numerous ventures, starting with our latest! From the 4th -7th October we held our 9th Leadership camp down at Nyala Pans River Camp and what a blast it was! (Thankyou Rich for your generous sponsorship)
The camp was just the beginning of a journey we plan to take with these promising youngsters, from 4 High schools around Richmond. Nyala Pans was an ideal venue to pack many challenges, much adventure, and a whole lot of fun into just 4 days. The growth was phenomanal and the experience life-changing
A big thankyou to The PMB Community Chest for their continued belief in this Project.. Without their valued support it would not be possible to impact and mentor these youngsters. Thankyou too to Richmond Municipality for transporting the learners safely too and from the venue. It certainly does take a village to raise a child!

2021 was not the busiest of years....BUT we did manage to host our annual U14 soccer and netball tournament at Richmond Primary school fields! We had 8 teams this year, and the Canadian Soccer Beach Soccer community once again donated kit for them all! Boxer Superstores Richmond, kindly donated food and several local NGO's got involved in helping with the running of the tournament. The girls really enjoyed learning from the best! Jess Nkomo, a past SA netballer graciously gave of her time to coach our budding netballers. The passionate Nicholas Ingel from EMET gyms in Johannesburg came to share his story and teach some vital self defence moves! All in all a GREAT day of togetherness in SPORT.

The Community Chest sponsored our Gr 11 Leadership Camp in the Umko Valley in March...a life changing experience for a talented group of youngsters from outlying schools around Richmond. These teens, already leaders in their own rights, were given opportunities to discover new skills, we pushed them out of their comfort zones ....and taught them the importance of "staying in the boat" paddling hard through the rapids, and celebrating each others strengths on this tough journey called life! We trust that it has made the difference they need to get them ahead this year.
