A Sub Rosa armed response officer responded to an alarm activation at a client in Main Reef Road at approximately 01:10. While conducting a patrol around the block near a Spar in a nearby side street, the officer observed two suspicious bakkies — a Nissan double cab and another single cab vehicle — with approximately 15 armed suspects standing outside the vehicles.

As the officer drove past the scene, the suspects immediately opened fire on him. Due to the superior training and tactical preparedness of the Sub Rosa armed response officer, he was able to return fire effectively while avoiding injury during the attack.

It is suspected that two suspects may have been wounded during the exchange of gunfire. Despite coming under heavy fire, the officer exited his vehicle and continued to defend himself before retreating to the nearest SAPS station for assistance. One of the suspect vehicles allegedly pursued him, and a second exchange of gunfire reportedly took place en route to the police station.

The officer contacted control and returned to the scene together with SAPS members. Upon arrival, no suspects were found on scene, and it is believed the wounded suspects were removed by their accomplices before police arrived.

Investigators later recovered approximately 100 spent cartridges on scene, including R5, AK-pattern rifle and 9mm ammunition. The scene is believed to be linked to a possible ATM bombing operation.

No injuries were sustained by the responding officer.
