❤️ AN UPDATE ON NIEL’S JOURNEY ❤️
It has been another incredibly difficult chapter in Niel’s recovery, and unfortunately, the road has not become any easier.
Since our last update, Niel has undergone 4 additional surgeries, bringing his journey to even more procedures than we ever imagined. One of these surgeries was for his eyes, in an attempt to improve the severe double vision he has been battling. Sadly, after seeing multiple specialists, we have now been told that there is nothing more they can do for his eyes at this stage. We are trying to come to terms with that reality while continuing to support him through the challenges it brings every day.
Another heartbreaking setback is that we are currently unable to continue with his physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. His medical aid has declined to provide additional PMB sessions, despite the fact that these therapies remain such an important part of his rehabilitation and recovery.
We are also facing uncertainty regarding Niel’s future at school. Because of the extent of his injuries and the difficulties he continues to experience, there is a possibility that he may be medically boarded from teaching. We are currently waiting for the Department’s decision, and this uncertainty has been incredibly difficult for both of us.
Niel is still fighting. ❤️
He is still working every day to regain the things that were taken from him — his independence, his movement, his speech and so much of the life he had before this nightmare began.
And I am still beside him, every single step of the way.
The financial burden of this journey continues to grow, especially now that we have to find ways to cover treatment and rehabilitation that are no longer being funded by medical aid.
