Designing for Everyone: Event Safety Through the Lens of Disability and Universal Access

A conference, expo, summit or festival each carries its own risk profile — crowd surges and bottlenecks at festival gates, fire and electrical risk in exhibition halls, medical emergencies during long summit days, and the ever-present threat of load-shedding cutting power to lifts and assistive technology mid-event. For guests with disabilities, these risks compound. An audio-only fire alarm is silent to a deaf attendee. A blocked accessible exit is, in practice, no exit at all.
During SACIA's Event Safety Summit, Manda, managing editor of THISABILITY newspaper, will explore event safety through the lens of disability and universal access.

On Wednesday, 3 June 2026 students from Tshwane University of Technology Main campus were inducted as student members of SACIA. These students have all passed the qualifying exam for a professional designation in event management, and will be inducted as a member of SACIA's Young Professionals Forum once they have graduated. Amazingly, this group achieved an average score of 79% on the qualifying exam - perhaps reflecting the close alignment between the classroom learning provided at the University and the competencies assessed in our qualifying exam. A big thank you to Hanlie Delport and the team at Exhibitions & Events Association of Southern Africa (EXSA) for sharing their GED celebrations with us - and a huge round of applause for Lisa Welthagen and the academic team at TUT.
