Valued Citizens Initiative As a multidisciplinary team, we walk a journey with young people and provide essential Soft Skills & Social Justice programmes to develop Valued Citizens!

Established in 2001, Valued Citizens Initiative is a South African Non-Profit Organisation that aims to connect, inspire and empower learners, educators, school management teams, parents and social work professionals to become Valued Citizens contributing towards the South African economy. Valued Citizens Initiative facilitates critical soft skills programmes in the Free State, Limpopo, Gauteng, N

orth West, Western Cape, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces that promote citizenship education, leadership skills, and self-development. These programmes are coordinated by a multidisciplinary professional team that enhances the ecosystem of a child through accredited professional development courses and the enhancement of parenting skills to strengthen families. Furthermore, we develop accountable young leaders and Valued Citizens to support our democracy and increase youth employability.

Leadership frequently manifests during periods of adversity.

During the Bridging For Life sessions, our Grade 11 Valued Citizens learners engaged in dialogues regarding the challenges they encounter within their school environment. Subsequently, as a team, they decided to concentrate on a Valued Citizen project centered on the theme "Addressing social ills together to foster academic excellence." Encouraged to consider how personal initiative can bring about change, they assumed responsibility for leading their project, involving the School Management Team, educators, and their peers to respond, lead, and contribute to positive change.

Our young Valued Citizens highlighted significant concerns such as bullying, the lack of school uniforms for many vulnerable learners, academic underperformance due to a limited perspective beyond current circumstances, and safety issues within the school. The project, in its design phase, inspired learners to propose solutions that advocate for respect, support, discipline, academic dedication, and a secure school environment for everyone.

Parenting is a journey we need to live being values-driven. Be a caregiver first, model care, support and love to build trust and healthy relationship.
Remember children feel safe when clear boundaries are set with honest dialogue taking place around the table or the fire this winter.
Stay safe and be the role model your child need!

Silence is not always golden! The dialogue of equals needs to take place in our country for us to unite for meaningful actions where we take accountability!
At Valued Citizens Initiative, we believe in developing platforms where our children and youth have a voice through dialogues.

Dialogues tame the noise we find in communities, social media and at home when disagreements become violent scenes.
Sondela, come closer to listen to the aspirations of our youth!

This morning we celebrated ECD Practitioners and Educators from Primary Schools from N'wamitwa Village in Limpopo in the presence of our partners Kaross Foundation and Limpopo Department of Education.

Values matter and need to be portrayed by educators as role models in the classrooms as we co-create together our society making our constitutional values a way of life.
A learning culture is built every day by being inclusive and taking care of the wellbeing children while moulding their character.

On International Day for Families, the iNurture parenting skills programme commenced at Manyunyu Primary School with 137 parents dedicated to learning how to foster confidence in children from birth to six years of age.

They articulated their understanding of family, highlighting love, unity, togetherness, presence, support, respect, and trust. Subsequently, they inquired about how we can foster trust within our communities, given the various manifestations of danger prevalent everywhere.

Through discussing numerous examples and the observations of children's reactions in the room, parents and caregivers explored methods for fostering confidence in children, even in unfamiliar social settings. This included understanding how to discern trustworthy situations and when to seek assistance, recognising that a parent's initial response significantly influences a child's developing nervous system regarding trust.
One step at a time, parents also identified healthy routines and habits which enable a great sense of safety in children.

Children in our society are vulnerable and require our protection. Children Protection Month prompts us to reflect on our nation's laws, and it is imperative that our customary and civil marriage laws are reviewed and aligned with the Children's Act to safeguard children from early marriage and families from the practice of "selling" their children for lobola.

As the Valued Citizens Initiative, our multi-professional team is dedicated to protecting children and promoting their well-being in a holistic approach. The law is clear - children under the age of 16 do not possess the full maturity or capacity to provide informed voluntary consent, as the age difference can compromise a child's autonomy due to existing power dynamics that could lead to coercion.

So, for the prevention of teenage pregnancy and the abuse of children, we facilitate Comprehensive Sexuality Education in schools as it is of paramount importance for both our adolescents and their parents. We also empower social work professionals to facilitate sexuality education to further support the protection of children in our communities and be able to articulate the legal framework in cases of the violation of the rights of children.
Together, we have the power to protect children!

Thanks to our valued partners the Gauteng Department of Social Development, Department of Basic Education, Department Of Justice And Constitutional, Department of Social Development, France in South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi.

When our young Valued Citizens freely articulate their perspectives on the significance of upholding their personal and Constitutional values. Embracing who they are and nurturing a great sense of belonging to our nation, South Africa, they addressed all the high school principals from Mopani East District portraying confidence while enhancing their communication skills.
Kaross Foundation, our Platinum Partner has invested in developing active citizenry within the rural schools of N'wamitwa Village. The Sondela programme fosters unity and allows us to draw upon the valuable life experiences of our young people, as their contributions are significant and enrich the diverse tapestry of our society.

The Valued Citizens learners from Nonhlevu Secondary School, Mbekamuzi High school, Qoqulwazi Secondary School, Guzana, and Ricardo Mthembu high schools engaged on the moving Truth Mandala exercise as part of the Bridging for Life programme.

They opened up about real life struggles, hopes, fears and aspirations. From dealing with grief and family pressure to overcoming negative influences and emotional pain, young people showed incredible courage by sharing their stories. Dlamini shared - "This rock is a representation of my strength. I carry the weight of my family's expectations and responsibilities with pride." Andile reflected -"This empty bowl represents the empty space my grandmother left when she passed away." Despite the challenges they face, learners continue to choose HOPE. Many Valued Citizens hold on to their academic journey as they know that education is a pathway for a better future and recognised the programme as a safe space for growth, healing, and support.

Your story matters.
You voice matters.
And you do not have to carry your journey alone.

First starting with a Team Building session designed to foster trust, understanding and a sense of belonging, we then stepped into an initial reflection on self-management and self-leadership together with our learners part of the Bridging for Life programme.

As young Valued Citizens, they shared about their goals ranging from long-term to short-term and engaged on how these provide direction and motivation. Through dialogues and the development of mind maps, our youth in KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Western Cape enhanced their self-awareness regarding personal values, and how they assist them to navigate change, cultivate healthy relationships, and commit to purpose-driven leadership.
Ethics and Skills that later on will be essential in the world of work!
