I have been fortunate to spend some time as a judge for the Next Engineers design and science projects at University of the Witwatersrand over the years, and with Cohort 3 graduating last week I wanted share what that expeirence has been like.

What struck me most was not so much the projects as the way the learners presented them. These are high school kids standing in front of a panel, explaining why they went with one idea over another, what they had to give up along the way and how they arrived at their decisions. Some of them were clearly nervous, but they could articulate their thinking in a way I honestly didn't expect at that age, and it reminded me a lot of the conversations we have in engineering reviews.

The other thing I will remember is the parents. You could see how proud they were watching their children present, and for me that said more about the value of the programme than any number could.

Congratulations to the 27 learners who graduated, and to the families who supported them through it. As someone who started out as a mechanical engineer, I'm really proud that GE Vernova is part of this, together with PROTEC STEM, University of the Witwatersrand, FHI 360 and the Kutitiva Foundation.

Thank you also to Joe Anis and Kenneth Oyakhire for coming to celebrate with the graduates. I'm looking forward to seeing where these young people end up.

Today I had the privilege of delivering the keynote closing speech at the Next Engineers Closing Ceremony, celebrating 22 engineering students who benefited from the five-year programme. • My key message was simple: Engineering is not just about creating technology, designing machines, or building...

What an inspiring week in !
I had the honor of representing GE Vernova and the GE Vernova Foundation at the 2026 Next Engineers Engineering Academy graduation. Seeing these 27 learners from 10 high schools across Johannesburg proudly walk the stage after 180+ hours of rigorous training and design challenges was a powerful reminder of why we invest in hands-on learning, mentorship, and scholarships that open doors to opportunity and shape the future of STEM.

Supporting young talent through programs like Next Engineers isn't just good practice – it's essential to what the GE Vernova Foundation stands for. Here in Johannesburg, we're witnessing firsthand how these opportunities empower the next generation of problem-solvers to tackle real-world energy challenges and drive meaningful change. Since 2022, the program has reached over 4,600 learners in the city, powered by the incredible commitment of our local employees who have volunteered thousands of hours to mentor young minds. I felt immense pride knowing our teams are putting the hashtag into action - actively shaping a more dynamic, inclusive future for the country's engineering sector, and expanding diversity in STEM education.

To our graduates: your curiosity is our greatest resource. Keep building and driving change.

Special thanks to our partners at , University of the Witwatersrand, FHI 360, and the Kutitiva Foundation for making this journey possible.
