Do you remember the tiny, undernourished, underweight baby Striped Weasel from a few weeks ago? She is now enjoying her own outside space with loads of enrichment, and is nearly 60cm long! We just love watching her on our CCTV system which allows us to monitor her with minimal interaction.
To support her very expensive and varied diet of mice and other small rodents, please consider making a donation via our website www.kogelbergbiosphere.org.za and put the reference "Weasel".

You may remember we recently held a Silent Auction at Menucha Coffee Shop and Restaurant, to find Ricky the Rhino a new home after this lovely hand crafted Rhino was donated to the Centre by Ogari in Franschhoek in order to raise funds.

We are very pleased to advise that Gardiol Van de Venter from Bettys Bay was the highest bidder with a generous offer exceeding the reserve amount.

Thank you Gardiol from all of us at the Centre and most of all from the animals.

๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐Ÿ’” Building Repair - Please vote for us๐Ÿ’”๐ŸŒง๏ธ

The recent storms have caused significant damage to our rescue facilities, making it even more challenging for us to care for the wildlife that depend on us every day.

But there is hope ๐Ÿ™

Weโ€™ve been given an incredible opportunity to be nominated for a FREE building repair โ€” something that would make a life-changing difference for our team and the animals we protect.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Please take a moment to visit the Nicoconstruct page
https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1QAK3itk3B/
and nominate Kogelberg Wildlife Rescue.

Your nomination in the comments - and importantly, your story as to how this could help us - would allow us to rebuild, restore, and continue giving injured and vulnerable wildlife a second chance at life ๐Ÿพ

Every click counts. Every share helps. Every bit of support means the world to us.

Thank you for standing with us โ€” for the animals who donโ€™t have a voice ๐Ÿ’š

Not every wild animal you come across needs to be rescued.

For example, young Cape grysbok are often left hidden by their mothers during the day while they forage nearby, returning later to feed them. What may look like an abandoned animal is often part of a perfectly natural survival strategy.

But there are times when wildlife does need human help. When that happens, itโ€™s important to remember that wild animals can become highly stressed by handling, and in some cases that stress can be life-threatening.

To a wild animal, humans are predators. Being captured and handled, hearing loud noises, or being in unfamiliar surroundings can be extremely frightening.

Look out for:

- Trembling or shaking

- Muscle weakness

- Frequent urination

- Excessive thirst

If you need to transport an injured animal to the vet or a rehabilitation centre, a few simple steps can make a big difference:

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Limit sensory stimulation

Cover the animalโ€™s eyes, reduce visual disturbance and handle as little as possible.

๐Ÿ”‡ Keep noise to a minimum

Speak softly and avoid unnecessary conversation or loud sounds.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Provide a safe, dark space

Place the animal in a ventilated cardboard box or pet carrier lined with a towel. Darkness helps many animals feel more secure.

โœ‹ Handle only when necessary

The less the animal is touched, the better.

๐ŸŒฟ When in doubt, call for advice

If youโ€™re unsure whether an animal needs help, contact the Kogelberg Biosphere Wildlife Rescue & Training Centre for guidance before intervening.

By staying calm and reducing stress, you can greatly improve an animalโ€™s chances of recovery and release back into the wild.

๐Ÿ’” Storm damage has devastated the Kogelberg Biosphere Wildlife Rescue & Training Centre

Over the past two days, winds of up to 130 km/h tore through the Kogelberg Biosphere โ€“ and the Wildlife Rescue & Training Centre has been hit hard.

Our outdoor rehabilitation enclosures have suffered extensive damage.

Two of our largest aviaries have been completely destroyed โ€“ a loss of more than R150,000

Several other enclosures have been badly damaged

One enclosure was blown away entirely

Most importantly, all of our patients are safe.

But if we are to continue rescuing and rehabilitating injured wildlife, we now need to rebuild.

From tomorrow (Wednesday 13 May), weather permitting, we will begin the clean-up process, with additional volunteers joining us later this week. Their time and energy are invaluable. But rebuilding will require materials, equipment and financial support.

๐ŸŒฟ How you can help

๐Ÿ’š Make a donation to our rebuild fund

The quickest and most effective way to help is by making a donation through our website:
https://kogelbergbiosphere.org.za/wildlife-rescue/

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Contribute practical items

We urgently need:

Screws, washers and other hardware

Cable ties and latches

Cement bricks

Old kennels

Tools such as a bandsaw or jigsaw

๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™€๏ธ Sponsor hands-on help

Additional helping hands over the coming days will assist us in repairing enclosures, paths and other storm damage as quickly as possible.

๐Ÿ“‹ Our full wish list

For more information about items needed, please contact Michelle on 073 314 0674.

This community has been our greatest support from the beginning. Right now, we need you more than ever.
