Single Mothers Society is a stokvel aimed at assisting single mothers struggling to make ends meet due to absentee fathers or widows whose husbands or partners must have passed on due to one or other cause. This is not a get-rich-quick scheme where desperate single mothers are enticed into investing their hard-earned money into schemes that promise them unrealistic high percentage returns over ver
y short periods of time…such as joining with only R200 and reaping a dividend of R20,000 in 6 months. Single Mothers Society is created to help single mothers across the country, starting here in Tshwane where we are based. We help them with subsidising their school fees, medical bills, sometimes rent or temporary shelter, groceries and birthday parties for children. The society will also work hand in hand with social workers in various towns and villages to get need assessment reports for communities. To join the society, single mothers will pay a once off joining fee of R100 each. This is an administrative fee and does not form part of the money that will be given to help our members. If we operate like that then it constitutes a pyramid scheme. However, when our members register their urgent needs, the society will send out messages to our members to notify them of a fellow member’s need that they should contribute amounts as small as R10 each just to help fix that specific member’s problem. Upon registration, members will receive a membership certificate and a copy of the constitution which serves as a guideline or rules for participation. Contributing to other members cry for help is one of the requirements.
