YOUTH DAY REFLECTION 💚💛

As South Africa commemorates Youth Day, we reflect on the Youth Day Boot Camp and the powerful conversations that closed the programme.

The fireside chat, led by SSCN Africa CEO Allan Williams, brought together young people and former elite sport stars for an honest conversation on mindset, attitude, hard work, mentorship and the lessons that shape us.

Participants were reminded that our young people are smart, capable and full of potential. With the right mindset, opportunities can open. With the right attitude, young people can go far. With hard work, discipline and support, they can shape their own futures.

One message stood out clearly: do not minimise who you are.

As we honour the youth of 1976, 50 years later, we also celebrate the young leaders of today, who continue to learn, lead and contribute to positive change in their communities.

DAY 2 IS UNDERWAY 💚💛

Day 2 of the Youth Day Boot Camp started with movement, fresh air and intention through a beach session.

Participants had the opportunity to reflect on the powerful afternoon sessions from Day 1, where conversations focused on child safety, leadership, teamwork, resilience and creating safer spaces for children and young people.

The morning activity reminds us that youth development is not only about information and skills, but also about wellness, discipline and taking care of the body and mind.

As the programme continues, participants are carrying forward the lessons of learning, linking and leading with purpose.

AFTERNOON SESSIONS COMPLETE 💚💛
The afternoon sessions brought together two powerful themes: safety and leadership.

Workshop 4, by Abigail Boschoff, created space for participants to reflect and share on what child safety means in their communities. The session reminded young people that children are vulnerable and must be protected, supported and made to feel safe.

Participants were also encouraged to understand their role in creating safe spaces, especially when a child comes to them for help. Listening with care, being a safe person and respecting child confidentiality were key messages from the session.

Workshop 5, by Dr Ian Galbraith, took participants outdoors for an adventure-based leadership session under the theme: Learning. Linking. Leading.
Through the obstacle course, teamwork, problem-solving and active participation, young people were challenged to think differently about leadership, trust, resilience and working together.

The session reminded participants that leadership is critical for progress, and that to make your dream work, you need effort. This is what youth development looks like in action: learning, moving, reflecting and growing together.

MORNING SESSIONS COMPLETE 💚💛

What a powerful start to the Youth Day Boot Camp.

Participants engaged in meaningful conversations around purpose, values, youth leadership, sport for development and the role young people can play in building stronger communities.

These sessions are part of building young leaders who are informed, confident and ready to take practical steps toward their future.

Now, it’s time for lunch, connection and reflection before the afternoon programme continues.

The Youth Day Boot Camp is officially underway, with opening remarks setting the tone for two days of learning, reflection, leadership, wellness and meaningful engagement.

SSCN Africa CEO, Mr Allan Williams, reminded young people that change starts with hard work, values and purpose.

“There is no substitute for hard work. Nothing comes for free. Ultimately, it is the values that we stand on that will bring change in our lives.”

He also reflected on the legacy of the youth of 1976, reminding participants that the baton has now been passed to a new generation of young leaders.

The first session highlighted SSCN Africa’s role in using sport for development to support youth and community development, while encouraging young people to be active contributors to positive change.

Elizabeth Slater from African Bank led the financial literacy session, sharing practical lessons on money management, discipline and building good habits early.

“Without discipline, you will waste your money.”

Through the Youth Day Boot Camp, we continue creating spaces that empower.

The closing programme began with the Conference Declarations, led by SSI Trustees Karen Perrier and Chiel Warners.

This interactive session brought together delegate reflections from across the three days and affirmed shared commitments to equity, inclusion and safer sport for all. Delegates also endorsed the updated SSI Safe Sport Principles as a foundation for continued action beyond the conference.

The Declarations marked an important leadership transition, with Karen Perrier stepping into the role of Chair of Safe Sport International. Karen expressed gratitude for the trust placed in her and reflected on the personal commitment, lived experience and care she brings to SSI’s next chapter.

Chiel spoke about the purpose at the heart of SSI: everyone, everywhere safe in sport. Safe Sport 2026 brought that purpose to life, uniting people across countries, cultures, disciplines and experiences to strengthen the global safe sport movement.

The conference was formally closed by Neal Anderson, CEO of Safe Sport International, and Allan Williams, CEO of Sport for Social Change Network Africa. Allan reflected on the significance of hosting the conference in Cape Town and the responsibility to carry forward the work and commitments made. Neal thanked the partners, hosts, trustees, staff, volunteers, speakers, facilitators, delegates and wider team who made the conference possible.

After three days of global dialogue, African leadership, research, lived experience, policy and partnership, the closing session focused on turning momentum into commitment.

The work does not end here. It continues through the relationships built, pledges made, principles endorsed and actions taken back into organisations, communities and systems.

As we look ahead to Safe Sport Day on 8 August 2026, we do so with renewed energy, shared responsibility and a strengthened commitment to making sport safer, more inclusive and more accountable.

As Neal reminded delegates:

Safe sport is the only sport that matters.

From conversation to commitment — advancing safe sport together.
