SANParks Honorary Rangers are the official South African National Parks (SANParks) volunteer organisation mandated by a
Co-operation Agreement with SANParks. We are a registered public benefit and non-profit organisation. We are a group of passionate volunteers who give freely of our time and skills to support conservation in the South African National Parks. We provide the people of South Africa

and our business community the opportunity to support our national parks. We are the SANParks preferred channel for public support towards our national parks. The SANParks Honorary Rangers movement has a long history. Volunteers were active in the Kruger National Park as early as 1902, helping to alleviate the workload of full-time rangers, but we were officially established on 5th May 1964. Today, there are over 2 300 SANParks Honorary Rangers, all volunteers, based in 31 regions around the country and working in 20 of our national parks, such as Kruger, Addo, Table Mountain and Kgalagadi National Parks. Our members are involved on various levels, from assisting at entry gates, raising funds for counter poaching activities, assisting in visitor management, running youth activities and even giving specialist advice on infrastructure and scientific projects. We provided SANParks with more than R100 million in donations and volunteer support over the past financial year and will continue to support our national parks.

Tonight! 20:30 on Kyknet, DSTV.

"For those of you who may be interested...we are celebrating a 100 years of Kruger National Park with a special television episode on the K9 dogs!

When we hear the term ‘K9’ we immediately picture highly trained police or military dogs, and it is no different in the Kruger National Park! K9’s are used in anti-poaching operations with each breed having a unique and specialised ability. This ranges from detection to scent tracking and ultimately apprehension.

Join us as we take a seat in the SANParks helicopter next to the head of the K9 dog unit for an inside glimpse into this world.
An adrenaline packed episode making us feel like we are right there with these four-legged heroes!

Tune in tonight Sunday

(31 May) at 20:30 for 'Bewonder & Bewaar' with English subtitles on Kyknet channel 144, DStv.

Our Heritage, Our Future - 100 years of Kruger

Today, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Kruger National Park. We are deeply grateful to all who have dedicated their lives to protecting and conserving this precious place for 100 years. It has warmed hearts, inspired a love of nature and connected millions to the magnificent wildlife of this country.

We extend our warmest congratulations to SANParks management, staff and rangers and thank them for all they do to protect and conserve “our beloved Kruger”. May this rich heritage of conservation, connection and community continue to grow and flourish for centuries to come.

The Kruger National Park was proclaimed on 31 May 1926.

An Addo "adventure" of a difference nature.

Did you know that Addo Elephant National Park has no natural surface water sources? Every drop is carefully managed through boreholes powered by solar energy and trusty Lister pumps. Waterholes aren’t just lifelines for wildlife - they’re important management tools. Partial exclusion curtains give smaller game safe access where elephants might otherwise dominate.

In the heat of summer, it’s a spectacle: herds of elephants lumbering in unison, heads swaying, dust swirling, all gravitating towards the water. These spots become bustling hubs - elephants bathing, buffalo wallowing, animals marking territory, and smaller game sneaking in for a drink.

It’s one thing to watch this activity unfold, but it takes on a whole new meaning when you think about having to clean up after it. Recently, a group of dedicated SANParks Honorary Rangers, Addo Region and SANParks staff did exactly that - literally getting to the bottom of the Ngulube Waterhole, scrubbing, clearing and cleaning it out.

Hats off to these volunteers for their teamwork, grit and dedication. Their efforts are a reminder that conservation isn’t only about protecting animals - it’s about maintaining the delicate systems that sustain them.

PS: Any hints on removing mud and p**p stains from uniforms would be much appreciated!
