What do you need to feel "equal"? While some of us would think of material things like wheelchair ramps, accessible vehicles and bigger bathrooms, or even someone to assist with tasks others take for granted. In the republic of Phyllis Robertson this means so much more, as all of these material things are well-entrenched here.
Some of us need to be listened to, have our involuntary actions and behaviour separated from our human dignity and seen for what it is. Some need someone to listen when we tell the same story for the umpteenth time, without judgment or admonition.
Die van ons wat nie met woorde praat nie, het nodig dat iemand oogkontak maak en in ons siele inkyk om te verstaan wat ons woordeloos sê. Ons het ook nie nodig dat iemand besonder hard met ons praat of ons ignoreer nie, want ons ore werk heel goed.
'n Diagnose is nooit 'n verskoning vir swak gedrag nie, dit is egter 'n rede en die van ons met psigiatriese kondisies vra 'n ferm hand wat sagkens vat.
In ons anderse Volkleur-familie is almal "equal", inwoners, personeel en families, en ons wye verskeidenheid gestremdhede is almal normaal hier. Menseregte is nie onderhandelbaar nie.
