Statement from NotInMyName International on South Africa’s Freedom Day

April 27, 2026

On this Freedom Day, we at NotInMyName International stand with all South Africans in commemorating the historic dawn of democracy in 1994. We honour the courage of those who sacrificed everything to break the chains of apartheid. That first democratic vote remains a triumph of the human spirit, and we celebrate every citizen’s right to walk, speak, and live with dignity that was once violently denied.

But celebration without honest reckoning is hollow.

Thirty-two years into freedom, we must lament the profound missed opportunities to build an economically free and progressive society. The promise of liberation included land, housing, jobs, and shared prosperity. Instead, we see a persistent racialised economy, staggering youth unemployment, and an elite that has captured the state’s resources while too many live in shacks without running water. Economic freedom has not arrived. The structural pillars of apartheid’s wealth distribution remain largely intact, and progressive policies have too often been sacrificed to corruption and short-term political gain.

Further, we issue a sober caution against South Africa’s high crime rate – a crisis that has itself become a form of unfreedom. No family should live behind fortified walls. No child should fear walking to school. No woman should face the daily terror of gender-based violence, which the state has failed to stem despite fine words. Crime corrodes trust, strangles investment, and traps communities, especially the poor, in a perpetual state of fear. This is not the society we bled for.

We call on all leaders – in government, business, and civil society – to treat economic stagnation and violent crime as national emergencies equal to any past struggle. Freedom Day must not become a ritual of empty speeches. It must be a day of recommitment: to land and livelihood, to safety and justice, and to a truly progressive South Africa where nobody is left behind.

Issued on Behalf of NotInMyName International.

No freedom without economic justice. No justice without safety.

*Statement by Not In My Name on the r**e of 12 year old child by Pastor*

There are moments that still a nation, when the air grows heavy with the weight of what has been done, and we are reminded, painfully, that the safety we promise our children is still not guaranteed.

Not In My Name has learnt with great shock of the alleged r**e of a 12 Year old, in Dobsonville, Soweto.

This act represents a grave violation of the rights, dignity, and safety of a child and an unforgivable breach of trust. Not In My Name strongly condemns this act.

We call on law enforcement agencies and the justice system to act with urgency and firmness. The rule of law must prevail, and accountability must be pursued without fear, favour, or delay. Those found guilty must face the full consequences of their actions.

We further emphasise that no individual, regardless of their position in society, their profession, or their standing within any institution, is above the law. Leadership must never be used as a shield for wrongdoing.

We urge communities to remain calm and allow the legal process to take its course while continuing to stand united against all forms of gender based violence and crimes against children.

Our thoughts are with the survivor and her family. We reaffirm our commitment to advocating for the protection of children, the support of survivors, and the eradication of gender based violence in all its forms.

Today, we remember, 21 March 1960, Sharpeville, South Africa. May the lives lost during the Sharpeville Massacre continue to remind us of the responsibility we carry to build a society worthy of the freedom for which they paid the highest price. Far we have come, long we still have to go.
