Words matter.

The words we choose can make someone feel seen; or feel reduced.

At BrainLife, we try to speak with dignity; because behind every story of brain injury is a whole person, and a whole family.

Human Rights Day is about dignity, access, and the right to participate fully in community life.

For people living with brain injury, the barriers are often practical: transport, income loss, access to therapy, and being misunderstood.

A survivor shared: “I didn’t lose who I am. I just needed support to find my way back.”

At BrainLife, we walk the journey with survivors and families through weekly group therapy days, counselling, and community support.

Today is World Head Injury Awareness Day.

A head injury is not always obvious. The most difficult symptoms are often invisible: fatigue, memory changes, headaches, sensory overload, and feeling “not like myself”.

A survivor told us: “The hardest part was explaining what nobody could see.”

If you know someone living with a brain injury, patience and understanding are powerful forms of care.

This Brain Injury Awareness Month, we’re sharing brain injury in the words of survivors.

Brain injury can change:

- Energy and concentration
- Speech and language
- Mood and relationships
- Confidence in everyday tasks

Recovery is not a straight line. It is a journey made of **small steps**, and it is lighter when nobody has to walk alone.

Meet John. John was working as a roofer when the disaster of stroke strike. John not only lost the use of his right side but also his ability to understand and put together language. John could not return to work and as he is the breadwinner of his family, the impact of this is devastating. After 3 years John has still not received a single cent from the UIF.

Brain Injury is……. not being able to provide for your family.

Meet Helena. Helena suffered a stroke right at the time when she was supposed to gear down and enjoy all the freedom that retirement brings. Brain injury stole what was meant to a time of joy and adventure and instead has lead to dependence and challenges.

Brain Injury is …… frustrating.
