Our Crop Quality Division performs national crop quality surveys on wheat, maize, soybeans, sunflower, and grain sorghum, while offering specialised analyses on food, feed, and related products.

The division’s scope includes:
👉Grading of grains and oilseeds & nutritional analyses
👉Multi-mycotoxin analysis (using LC-MSMS)
👉Dough quality and baking tests on wheat flour
👉Vitamin, mineral, and amino acid analyses
👉Research support, training courses, and proficiency schemes

To confidently provide accurate, reliable, and comparable measurement results, testing laboratories implement compliance with quality standards such as ISO/IEC 17025.

Since 1999, the SAGL has complied with this international standard and received accreditation from SANAS. Regular surveillance audits, proficiency testing schemes, measurement standards, and reference materials confirm technical competence and ensure international comparability.

Every year, SAGL conducts national crop quality surveys providing key insights into South Africa’s commercial crops. They highlight regional differences, deliver export data, identify trends in environmental change and food safety, and support regulatory decisions.

The findings also equip farmers, researchers, seed breeders, and policymakers with reliable data to improve efficiency, maintain standards, and strengthen food security across the grain and oilseed value chain.
