💛 **Youth Day**

Today, we celebrate the incredible strength, bravery, and resilience of young people — not only in the world around us, but in the lives they quietly change every day.

Throughout time, children have shown us that courage is not measured by age. Their voices, their actions, and their bravery have shaped communities, inspired change, and brought hope where it was needed most.

Children see the world differently. They see possibility where others see limits, kindness where others may overlook it, and hope even in the face of difficulty. Perhaps there is something powerful in that — something we, as adults, can learn from. To slow down, to listen, and to try see the world through their eyes.

At Jakaranda and Louis Botha Kinderhuise, we witness this spirit every single day. In the resilience of our children, in their ability to keep going, to dream, to laugh, and to care for one another — they remind us what true strength looks like. ✨

This Youth Day, we honour all the children who have made a difference through their bravery, and we celebrate the ones who continue to do so every day.

🎨 **Moment Monday**

We recently discovered these incredible artworks proudly displayed in House 6 at Jakaranda Kinderhuis — and we just had to share them! 🖌️✨

During the previous school holidays, one of our amazing house parents got creative and hosted an art activity to keep the children busy… and safe to say, we have some future Picassos in the making! 🎭 (Move over, fridge doors — we’re running out of wall space!)

Like always, at Jakaranda and Louis Botha Kinderhuise, we believe in creating meaningful experiences for our children — especially during the school holidays. That’s why we ensure that every child has the opportunity to go off the premises at least once a week to explore, learn, and simply enjoy being a child 💛

However, outings during the holidays can become quite costly, and we rely on the support of our community to help make these moments possible. Whether it’s sponsoring an outing, contributing towards activities, or partnering with us, every bit of support makes a real difference.

🌿✨ Feature Friday: Sensory Play Garden ✨🌿

It is our dream to build a Sensory Play Garden at Jakaranda Kinderhuis — a safe, calming and joyful space where children can simply be children 💛

This garden is designed to support play, healing, and development through the senses. Sensory play is incredibly important for children, especially those who have experienced trauma. It helps with emotional regulation, supports brain development, strengthens motor skills, and gives children a safe way to explore and express themselves 🌈

In this space, children will be able to feel, touch, move, listen, explore, and grow — all while having fun and reconnecting with the world around them 🌱

These pictures shared are just an idea of what we are working towards… but the reality is so much bigger and more meaningful 💛

The final plan will include outdoor gym equipment 💪, secure gates surrounding the garden for safety 🔒, and seating areas where children can rest, connect, and feel calm 🌳

We are currently working on Phase One of the garden 🛠️ — laying the foundation for something truly special for our children.

From the Pen of a Play Therapist 🎈

On this International Day of Play, I wanted to take over this page for a little while—just to step out of the adult world and into the one I am so privileged to visit every day.

Play is something we, as adults, often take for granted—without truly understanding the power it holds.

Play is the most natural language a child has. It crosses boundaries of language, age, race, and gender. Long before children can fully express themselves in words, they tell their stories through play.

Imagination opens a magical world where anything is possible. A simple piece of chalk becomes prison bars in a game of cops and robbers when there are no other resources. In that moment, creativity fills the gaps where reality cannot.

So often, we try to pull children into our adult world—structured, busy, and rule-bound—instead of giving ourselves the grace to step into theirs. A world where superheroes can be princesses, where bubbles are superpowers, and where healing happens in the most unexpected ways.

So often, I find myself stopped by the world and insights of a child—learning from them every single day.

More and more, I see children forgetting how to play—choosing instead to sit and stare at screens. This, to me, is a quiet tragedy. Because in losing play, we risk losing connection, creativity, and a vital part of childhood itself.

The world of a child is a magical place. And truthfully, it is a place I wish more of us would visit—more often, more freely, and with open hearts.

✨ This International Day of Play, I encourage you:
Take a moment. Sit on the floor. Pick up the toy. Blow the bubbles. Enter their world.

Because in play, children don’t just have fun—they heal, they connect, and they grow.

🌍🎈 International Day of Play 💛

Play is so much more than just fun — it is a vital part of every child’s growth and development. Through play, children learn to communicate, build relationships, solve problems, and express their emotions. It supports physical health, strengthens creativity, and helps children make sense of the world around them.

Play also deepens connection between children and adults. It’s in these shared moments — laughter, imagination, and even a bit of silliness — that trust grows and meaningful relationships are built 🤝💛

Today, we encourage every adult to reconnect with their inner child 🎈 Take time to play — kick a ball ⚽, build something together 🧱, play a game 🎲, or simply join in the fun. Small moments like these can have a lasting impact.

At our children’s homes, play is part of everyday life 💛 It brings joy, encourages connection, and helps create a sense of belonging for every child in our care.

And yes… even adults are occasionally reminded that “serious professionals” are allowed to jump, laugh, and be a little silly too 😄🎉 (we won’t tell anyone 🤫)

🌿💚 Child Protection Week – Closing Reflection 💚🌿

This week, we focused on ending violence against children — not just in words, but in action ✊💛

Our children took part in meaningful activities, from putting up posters  to handing out green ribbons 💚 as reminders to the adults around them. Important conversations were had, awareness was shared, and we ended the week together with a special straat braai 🔥🍔 — a moment of connection, joy, and simply being children.

Throughout the week, we reminded our children of something so important:
their voices matter 🗣️✨

Abuse thrives in silence, but speaking out brings light 💡
We continue to encourage our children not to keep bad secrets, and to always reach out to a safe adult, a brave CYCW, or a trusted person when they need support 🤝🌿 Together, we create a safe and brave space 🏡

Child protection within a CYCC is about so much more than safety alone 🌸

It is about creating a place where a child can begin to feel safe again. A place where fear is replaced with security, uncertainty with stability, and neglect with care 💛

Every day, we meet children at some of the most difficult moments of their lives — children who have experienced abuse, neglect, violence, loss, and trauma 💔

Child protection means seeing the child behind the circumstances 👀
It means offering more than a bed, a meal, or a roof over their heads.

It means offering dignity, compassion, stability, and hope 🌱
It means helping a child discover that they are worthy of love, care, and protection ❤️

As Child Protection Week comes to an end, we honour every child who has shown courage in the face of adversity, and every person who works tirelessly to ensure that children are safe, valued, and given the opportunity to heal and thrive 🙌💚

Every child deserves more than protection from harm — they deserve the chance to experience childhood, hope, and a brighter future 🌈❤️
