✨ Thankful Thursday 💙

As our Medical Month comes to an end, we want to take a moment to say a very big thank you to the incredible clinic sisters, doctors, nurses, specialists, and all the healthcare professionals who support our children at Jacaranda Kinderhuis and Louis Botha Kinderhuis.

From routine check-ups to specialist care — ear and eye tests, dental care, medication, medical assessments, therapy services, vaccinations, and even surgeries and ongoing treatment — your support makes a world of difference. Many of these services are offered free of charge or at greatly reduced costs, and without this network of care, so much of what we are able to do simply would not be possible.

You don’t just treat symptoms — you help us protect, support, and care for almost 300 children in a way that feels consistent, safe, and dignified 💙

We see you, we appreciate you, and we are truly grateful for the time, skill, and heart you invest in our children every single day.

🚲 **World Bicycle Day** 🚲

If there’s one thing our kids absolutely *wheelie* love… it’s cycling! 😄

From speedy races down the path 🚴‍♂️ to a few wobbly starts (and the occasional “I meant to do that” stop 😅), our bikes bring so much joy to our homes.

Cycling helps our children stay active, build confidence, improve balance, and most importantly — just have fun and feel free. 💛

But it does take a village…
Our children need extra support, whether it’s supervision while riding, help with maintenance, or someone to assist and encourage them along the way.

🛡️ Child Protection Week (29 May – 5 June) 🛡️

Child Protection Week reminds us that every child has the right to be safe, protected, and cared for. It calls on all of us to play a role in preventing abuse, neglect, and exploitation — and to create environments where children can grow, heal, and thrive. 💛

At Jakaranda Kinderhuis and Louis Botha Kinderhuis, child protection is at the core of everything we do. Working within the child protection sector means more than meeting basic needs — it means restoring dignity, building trust, protecting rights, and equipping children with the knowledge and confidence to understand their boundaries and use their voices.

This week, our children were reminded of the importance of identity, self-worth, and the power of saying no to abuse. These are not always easy conversations, but they are essential ones.

This is just the beginning of our Child Protection Week programme with our children. And while we do this work every day, this week is a gentle reminder to all of us — whether at home, in schools, or in our communities — to take a moment to have age-appropriate conversations, to listen, and to keep learning about how we can better protect the children around us.

A heartfelt thank you to the Tuks third-year Social Work students who presented a meaningful programme. Through engaging activities and thoughtful interaction, they helped our children better understand child protection in a way that was accessible, empowering, and impactful. 🌟

We are truly grateful for your time, care, and commitment.

🌱 Moment Monday 🌱

Just when you think you’ve seen it all… nature says, “Hold my roots.” 😅

A tree root recently decided to grow straight through the pipes of one of our houses. THROUGH. As in… surprise guest, no invitation, full plumbing chaos. 🚿🌳

It gave us a good laugh — but also a very real reminder: we care for 19 homes, each with its own quirks, surprises, and unexpected repair bills.

Keeping everything running takes constant maintenance, and the needs never really stop.

Perception vs Reality 👀

Not everything is as it seems… so we’re showing you the real story 💛

Today: Central Distribution Point

Perception:
Meals are made in one central space for everyone.

Reality:
At the heart of it all is our Central Distribution Point.

This is where all donations are received, sorted, and packed with care — before being distributed across our 28 homes 🏡

Each week, our house parents (child and youth care workers) receive meal packs with all the ingredients they need to cook that week’s menu for their home, creating warm, home-style meals for the children in their care.

With winter fast approaching ❄️, we always appreciate any food donations — meat, vegetables, and more.

Our team had a bit of fun this past weekend at an exhibition and couldn’t resist jumping on the trend! 🎥😌

One minute we were being professional… the next minute… this happened 👀😂
Safe to say — things escalated quickly.

Who knew a blazer (or a jacket, we guess) comes with this much personality? 😏

It was just too cute not to share… 🧩💛

At My Space, our amazing ladies build every donated puzzle first — so no child goes through the trouble of putting it together only to find a piece missing and end up disappointed. We love that extra bit of care 

With winter fast approaching, the ladies at both children’s homes have mentioned that these are some of our most needed items right now:

👖 Boys clothing
(There is a big shortage, especially medium and large sizes)

👟 Boys tekkies
(We currently have almost none left — although every child does have at least one pair)

🧤 Gloves, beanies & scarves
(Preferably in black, maroon, green, navy, royal blue, and grey — perfect for school)

🧦 Socks
(School socks in white and grey, as well as everyday socks)

👕 Boxer shorts
(All sizes)

👞 School shoes

✨ Feature Friday at House 12 💇‍♀️💙

Look at this cute getting ready station at House 12 at Jakaranda Kinderhuis 🥹✨

Mornings here have their own rhythm 😉 — mirrors in use, hairdryers going, and everyone trying their best to get ready for the day ahead 💇‍♀️

It’s in these small, everyday moments that confidence starts to grow. Where each child learns to take pride in themselves, while also being reminded that they’re part of something bigger — a home filled with support, kindness, and connection.

One minute it’s “where’s my brush?”, the next it’s braids, ponytails, and last-minute fixes happening all around 💙

It’s a space where personality definitely shows up early in the morning — from neat and simple to bold and creative — because individuality is always welcome here 🌈

It’s a little busy, a little loud, a little everywhere… but it’s also full of teamwork, laughter, and those small moments that make a house feel like home 🤗

At Jakaranda, it’s not just about getting ready… it’s about growing, together 💙
