Moment Monday 💙

Last week, during the power outages, one of our former children, Megan, saw our post about not having power and asked how she could help.

She and her fiancé didn’t just ask — they got cooking! They prepared and served an entire meal to our toddler houses.

When we asked Megan why she wanted to help, she simply said:

“Tannie, dit was my huis ook!” 🥹

And that’s what makes this moment so special. A child who once called us home has now come back to help the children who are where she once was. A true full-circle moment. 💙

The children gave her “hugs and hugs and more hugs” — and we think that says it all!

Thank you, Megan and her fiancé, for giving back and reminding us that once you’ve been part of the Jakaranda family, that connection can stay with you.

💙 Guest Parent, Volunteer and Mentor Information Evening 💙
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to make a real difference in a child’s life? Our children’s lives have been uprooted, but you can make a difference. 💙

Our Guest Parent, Volunteer and Mentor programmes give you the opportunity to become part of a child’s life — whether through spending time together, being a positive role model or welcoming a child into your home over weekends and school holidays. 🏡🫶🏼

We host a Volunteer, Mentor and Guest Parent Information Evening once a month, and attending an Information Evening is a requirement for all prospective volunteers, mentors and guest parents.

Feature Friday: Defend With Integrity 🥋💙

Our children recently had the opportunity to take part in a special Taekwondo belt testing event, where they worked hard, put their skills to the test and earned their next belts! 🥋👏🏼

Now we’d love to give them the opportunity to celebrate that achievement at the upcoming award ceremony — but we need R100 per child to make it possible. 💙

A massive thank you to Grandmaster Jodi Horn and Master Emma Horn, the Horn Family Foundation, NMAA and NMAA South Africa, as well as Sr Mitch Landman and Ma’am Celia Landman, for the incredible support you continue to give our children and the Defend With Integrity programme. 🫶🏼

And a special shout-out to one of our social workers, Debro, who puts her heart and soul into this activity and plays such an important role in making it possible for our children. 💙🥋

Your dedication gives our children the opportunity to work hard, build confidence, learn discipline and challenge themselves — and we are incredibly grateful for every person who makes this programme possible.

Duisende Dankie Donderdag 💙✨

Aan almal wat ons kinders se skoolvakansie besonders gemaak het met uitstappies — baie, baie dankie! 🫶🏼

Despite Jakaranda being without power for an entire week, there was still plenty of fun and adventure to be had! 😂💙

Ons kinders het nuwe plekke ontdek, lekker uit die huis gekom en memories gemaak wat hulle nog lank sal onthou. ✨

A huge thank you to everyone who gave their time, opened their doors and helped make these outings possible. 💙

A special shout-out to our CYCWs (houseparents), who had to get creative and make a plan to keep the holidays fun without electricity! 👏🏼😂

We are so grateful to everyone who helped make the school holidays special for our children. 🫶🏼

The lights are back on… but we still need your help. 💙

After a full week without power, we are incredibly grateful to say that our electricity has been restored. 🙏🏼

But unfortunately, the power coming back brought its own problems. The surges and interruptions caused significant damage to appliances we rely on every day, including TVs, kettles, microwaves, fridges and freezers. 💔

And with our kitchens unable to operate as they normally would, we have also had a greater need for food and grocery support.

To everyone who stood by us during that difficult week — whether you donated food, supplies, appliances, funds or simply reached out to ask how you could help — thank you. You were the light in our literal darkness. 🕯️💙

Now that the power is back, we still have a lot of rebuilding and replacing to do.

If you would like to help, you can donate towards replacing damaged appliances, donate food and groceries, or make a financial contribution towards our ongoing needs. Every bit of support makes a difference. 🫶🏼

🚨 WE NEED YOUR HELP 💙

Our houses at Jakaranda Kinderhuis have now been without electricity for an entire week, apart from a brief few hours of power. Sadly, that short period caused significant damage to some of our systems and appliances.

Our house parents are doing their absolute best to keep everything going, but the situation is becoming increasingly difficult — especially when it comes to preparing meals and keeping food safe.

We urgently need:

🕯️ Candles
🔥 Firewood
❄️ Dry ice
🍳 Gas stoves & small lighters
🥩 Meat & other food donations

If you can help with any of these items, please do. Every donation, big or small, helps us keep our houses running and our children cared for. 💙

Feature Friday: You're Soaring Now! 🚀

Our children had the opportunity to explore different career paths, learn practical life skills and meet people from a variety of fields — all thanks to a wonderful initiative organised by our 4th-year Social Work student, Travis Swart! 👏🏼

Throughout his project, Travis created opportunities for our children to learn about careers, budgeting, confidence, real estate and so much more. 💙

This is also what makes having 4th-year Social Work students with us so special. They spend a full year completing their practical placement, gaining hands-on experience in a Children’s Home while bringing fresh perspectives, knowledge and ideas that we get to learn from too. 🌱

🏠 WEAVE A SAFER HOME

At Jakaranda Kinderhuis and Louis Botha Kinderhuis, we care for around 300 children placed with us through an order from the Children’s Court.

With rising crime rates in our communities, we want to strengthen the security of our homes by weaving fencing material through the existing fences around both Jakaranda and Louis Botha Kinderhuise.

This strengthens the existing perimeter and makes it more difficult to climb or get through the fence — helping us create a safer environment for the children, staff and caregivers who call these homes theirs.

The project will cost R100,000, and we need your help to make it happen. 🔒

This is about more than a fence. It’s about making the places our children call home safer and more secure.
