“I would definitely be unemployed.”

That’s what Khothatso, 21, says when she thinks about where she might be today without the opportunity she received through Save the Children South Africa’s Skills to Succeed programme.

After leaving university and becoming a young mother, she wasn’t sure what came next. But Skills to Succeed gave her workplace experience, employability skills, and her first job. Today, she’s working, supporting her son and planning to go back to university.

Her story matters because South Africa’s youth unemployment rate is 47.4%. Behind every percentage is a young person with hopes, talent and a future they deserve a chance to build.

That is where we stand in the gap. Carrying forward the vision our founder, Eglantyne Jebb, who believed children deserved opportunities for a better future, and she did something about it.

More than 100 years later, we’re still carrying creating opportunities for the next generation.

She ran so we could walk.

Here’s a little activity to get the children thinking about climate change and the world they want to live in. 🌍

Second, we’re asking children to imagine they’ve travelled to the year 2050, and tell us what does the planet look like?

Are there more trees? 🌳
Is the air cleaner?
Does everyone have enough clean water? 💧
What has changed because people started taking care of the planet?

For , we would like to hear what children wish Earth to look like in 24 years. Ask your children “What do you want the world to look like in 2050?” and have them write a letter or draw a picture of what they see a greener planet to look like.. ✉️🎨

Their imagination can be big. Their ideas can be bold. And we’re thrilled to see their creativity come alive🌱

We’ll be sharing some of their throughout September.

What if children weren’t just affected by climate change, but empowered to help shape the solutions?

That’s the vision behind Generation Hope, Save the Children’s global campaign helping children understand climate change, take action in their communities, and have a say in the decisions that affect their future.

Here in South Africa, children are already leading the change:

🌱 They planted a 450-tree community forest.
🥕 Started food gardens.
♻️ Piloted recycling and upcycling projects.
🗣️ And helped bring children’s perspectives into national climate conversations.

In 2025, children even presented recommendations to help shape South Africa’s climate response.

This is Generation Hope in action. Children creating change today for a better tomorrow. But there is still so much more to do, and with your support, even more children can gain the skills, opportunities and confidence to lead.

A 16‑year‑old Malmesbury teenager has been arrested, allegedly linked to an international child exploitation network. This case underscores the growing risks children face online, the ways they can be targeted and exploited, and the urgent need for stronger protection in digital spaces.

Imagine your normal Tuesday… but climate change gets a say. 🌍

You wake up.
There’s no water.
Your school day is disrupted by flooding.
The heat makes it harder to concentrate.
Food is more expensive because drought has affected crops.

Suddenly, climate change doesn't feel like something happening somewhere else. It is already happening in South Africa.

Save the Children’s Born into the Climate Crisis report shows:

Children born in 2020 will face 6 times more river floods in thier lifetime compared to those born in 1960.

They will experience 4 times more crop failures, driving hunger and malnutrition.

Exposure to heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires will also multiply, threatening education, health and safety. Climate change isn't only about hotter days.

It can change whether a child can get to school, access safe water or live in a safe environment.

Children in South Africa are already feeling the effects.

The question is: what happens if we don't act?

Let’s talk about mental health. 💙

With the support of SIOC-CDT SA, we started the conversation with students at NCR Kuruman Tvet College, opening up space for dialogue, information, and real support through a Mental Health Awareness Campaign.

The message was simple but powerful: you don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

When schools, organisations and partners come together, we make it easier for young people to ask questions, share experiences, and access the help they need.

Because looking after our mental wellbeing is something we should all feel free to talk about- openly, honestly, and together.
