In this article NSPCA - National Council of SPCAs estimates 650 000 animals are kept in shelters across South Africa.

AHAWE believes that this number is conservative, and that this does not allow for the informal and unregistered "rescues/shelters/sanctuaries" that are mushrooming across South Africa.

Without stringent animal control measures like licencing, and strict animal keeping bylaws across all municipalities, that are enforced, the suffering animals endure will continue. Backyard breeders will continue to produce animals that have nowhere to go, expensive PAHC (primary animal health care) will lead to continuous unwanted litters and the forced mass euthanasia of healthy but homeless animals, will continue.

We urge all who claim to care about animals, and not only their own, to recognise the need for these regulations and bylaws, in order for South Africa to effectively prevent animal suffering - and to work toward less backyard breeding and more adoptions.

Pet surrenders to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA rose 43.7% in 2025/26, while demand for affordable veterinary treatment increased by 51.9%.

PUBLIC COMMENTS INVITED | PROPOSED REGULATIONS ON THE IDENTIFICATION OF ANIMALS

The Minister of Agriculture invites farmers, livestock owners, breeders, industry stakeholders and members of the public to submit written comments on the proposed Regulations Relating to the Identification of Animals.

The proposed regulations are intended to be made in terms of Section 28 of the Animal Improvement Act, 1998 (Act No. 62 of 1998).

HAVE YOUR SAY | Interested persons are encouraged to review the proposed regulations and submit their written comments within 90 days from the date of publication of the notice.

🚨 A DEEPLY DISTURBING ADVERTISEMENT – DONKEY SKINS WANTED! 🚨

The Highveld Horse Care Unit (HHCU) is extremely concerned by an advertisement circulating, openly calling for “as many donkey skins as you can supply” for export.

We find this deeply alarming.
Donkeys are already among the most vulnerable and exploited animals in our country. They are stolen, abused, transported under horrific conditions and slaughtered for their skins to feed an international demand.

An advertisement encouraging the supply of donkey skins raises serious animal welfare concerns and questions that demand answers.
🐴 Where will these donkeys come from?
🐴 How will their origins be verified?
🐴 What measures are in place to prevent theft, illegal slaughter and animal cruelty?
🐴 Who is ensuring that all relevant animal welfare, slaughter and export regulations are being followed?

The promise of financial gain from donkey skins creates a very real risk of further exploitation of these hardworking, often overlooked animals.

Donkeys are not disposable commodities. They are sentient animals deserving of protection, dignity and humane treatment.

Investigations are underway to ascertain the legitimacy of this advertisement.

We urge donkey owners to remain vigilant and communities to report suspicious activities involving donkeys.

We cannot allow profit to come at the expense of animal welfare.

🐴 Their skins have a price. Their lives have value.
