Growing Readers, Growing Futures: The Power of Early Literacy and Numeracy.
Last week, Umlambo Foundation brought together voices and perspectives that reminded us of a fundamental truth: a child’s future is shaped, in part, by the foundations we help them build today.
In her opening remarks at our Literacy Day Virtual Webinar, Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Founder of Umlambo Foundation, set the tone for an important conversation about the role of early literacy and numeracy in unlocking children’s potential and creating pathways to lifelong learning.Early literacy and numeracy are more than academic skills. They are building blocks for confidence, opportunity and participation in the world. Ensuring that every child develops these foundations requires a shared commitment from families, educators, communities, policymakers and partners.

Watch Dr Mlambo-Ngcuka’s opening message and join us in championing stronger foundations for every child. At Umlambo Foundation, we remain committed to advancing education and creating opportunities for every learner to learn, aspire and thrive.

Every girl deserves the freedom to choose her future. 💙
On International Day of the Girl (11 October), a statement was issued by UN Women, and we stand with the call to end child marriage and invest in girls’ rights.
Globally, one in five girls is married before the age of 18, putting her education, safety, health, and future at risk.
At Umlambo Foundation, we believe education is one of the most powerful pathways to opportunity. Investing in girls means keeping them in school, protecting their rights, strengthening their voices and creating opportunities for them to learn, lead and thrive.
Let’s turn commitments into action. Invest in girls. Protect their rights. Keep them learning. Empower them to lead.

From the first session to the final in-person contact session, what a journey it has been.

This past Saturday, Umlambo Foundation, in partnership with the University of Johannesburg (UJ), held the final in-person contact session of the Short Learning Programme (SLP) for our female Science teachers at Fulufhelo Special School, in Vhembe District.
When we began this journey, the focus was on investing in women who are shaping the future, strengthening their subject knowledge, building practical skills and exploring innovative approaches to teaching Science. As the programme progressed, these teachers have continued to learn, engage and grow, carrying new knowledge and perspectives back into their classrooms.

For Umlambo Foundation, this is what meaningful investment in education looks like. When we strengthen teachers, we strengthen classrooms. When we strengthen classrooms, we create better opportunities for learners.
The value of professional development extends far beyond the educators in the room. Every teacher equipped with greater knowledge, confidence and new tools has the potential to influence countless learners and inspire the next generation to engage with Science, STEM and the possibilities that education can unlock.

We are proud to have walked alongside these women on this journey and grateful to the University of Johannesburg for the partnership that made this learning opportunity possible.

The final session may mark the end of the in-person component, but the impact continues in classrooms, in learners and in the futures they are empowered to imagine.

One teacher. One classroom. Many possibilities. 💙

600 learners. 29 schools. One day that opened the door to new possibilities.

Together with Aviation Development in Africa (ADA) and The Link, we brought learners from 29 schools into an environment designed to broaden their horizons and introduce them to career opportunities they may not have previously considered.

From aviation and mining to agriculture, the day offered learners an opportunity to explore different industries, ask questions and engage directly with possibilities for their future.

What was particularly encouraging was the enthusiasm and curiosity shown throughout the day. Learners asked thoughtful, technical questions about aviation and showed genuine interest in careers that were, for many, completely new to them.

Experiences like these reinforce the importance of creating access to information and opportunity. Sometimes, helping a young person envision their future starts simply by showing them what is possible.

By opening doors, expanding exposure and building confidence, we can help young people move from wondering “What could I do?” to believing “I can do this.”

Yesterday, Umlambo Foundation hosted a truly remarkable celebration of the aspirations of the 1956 Women’s March, and what an experience it was.

This was much more than a Women’s Month gathering - it was deliberately structured around honouring the legacy of the 1956 women while asking what it means for women today to carry that legacy forward, particularly through education, science, leadership and opportunity. The programme brought together women leaders, educators, young people and representatives from education and industry, with strong emphasis on women as change-makers and on connecting education to employment.
That is the legacy of 1956. And it is a legacy we must continue to live, not only by remembering the women who marched before us, but by becoming the women who create opportunities for those who follow.
Through education, leadership, science, and opportunity, Umlambo Foundation remains committed to helping women and young people learn, aspire, lead and thrive.
Yesterday reminded us that when women lift one another, generations rise together.
