South Africa’s pig industry is operating in an increasingly complex and interconnected risk environment. Biosecurity cannot be confined to the farm.

𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁: Pig Improvement Company - PIC Africa

Piglet survivability is one of the biggest challenges in farming, especially when labour is tight. The key is to prioritise Day 1 care, where small actions make the biggest difference.

Two strategies stand out:
- Reduce stillborn piglets by keeping farrowing rooms clean, disinfected, and dry, and ensuring equipment like fans, feeders, and heat lamps are working. Shorter farrowing times also reduce risk.

- Minimise pre-weaning mortality (PWM) by focusing on small but viable piglets. Dry them, place them under heat, and help them consume colostrum early. Udder training within the first hour can reduce PWM by more than 50% on Day 1.

Labour in farming is about precision and care. By prioritising piglet management tasks, farmers can improve survivability, reduce losses, and strengthen herd productivity across South Africa.
