🚧 BARRICADING: The Right Barrier, the Right Place, the Right Time
Barricading is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent workplace injuries, protect the public, and ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 and the Construction Regulations, 2014.
Using the wrong barricade—or no barricade at all—can expose workers and the public to serious hazards such as falls, moving vehicles, electrical dangers, excavations, suspended loads, and restricted work areas.
Choosing the correct barricade matters:
🔴 Danger Barricades (Red/White)
Used where entry is strictly prohibited due to high-risk work such as:
* Live electrical work
* Excavations
* Crane lifting
* Demolition
* Hot work
* Working at height
🟡 Warning Barricades (Yellow/Black)
Warn people of hazards while allowing controlled access where appropriate. Ideal for:
* Maintenance work
* Housekeeping hazards
* Low-risk construction activities
🟨 Caution Tape
Provides a visual warning for minor hazards including:
* Wet floors
* Freshly painted surfaces
* Cleaning activities
🟧 Safety Fencing & Temporary Barriers
Perfect for:
* Construction zones
* Excavations
* Landscaping
* Public exclusion zones
🚧 Traffic Control Barriers
Water-filled barriers, concrete Jersey barriers, traffic cones and road signs help protect both workers and motorists during roadworks and vehicle movements.
Before starting any task, ask yourself:
✔ Is the work area clearly identified?
✔ Is the correct barricade being used for the level of risk?
✔ Can unauthorised persons enter the area?
✔ Are warning signs displayed?
✔ Is there enough space to safely work?
✔ Is the barricading inspected regularly throughout the job?
Remember: Barricades are only effective when they are installed before work starts, maintained throughout the task, and removed once the hazard no longer exists.
