June is Men's Mental Health Month.

Many men are taught to carry pressure quietly, to keep going when they are struggling, and to view vulnerability as weakness. Yet mental wellbeing is not a sign of weakness. It is an essential part of overall health.

Creating healthier communities means encouraging honest conversations, reducing stigma, and ensuring that men feel able to seek support when they need it.

Strength is not found in silence. It is found in recognising when support is needed and being willing to reach for it.

Mental health matters for everyone.

When difficult realities are not faced early, they often grow into larger crises with deeper consequences.

Avoidance may create temporary comfort, but unresolved issues rarely disappear on their own. Over time and delayed responses can allow harm, inequality, and division to become more difficult to address.

Strong communities are built when people are willing to confront challenges honestly and act before problems escalate further.

Because prevention will always cost less than repair.

Our Director Sabina Taderera joined Tekano - Health Equity in South Africa, where she is a Fellow, in reflecting on what Africa Day means in a time marked by conflict, displacement, inequality, and growing xenophobia across the continent.

In her reflections, she spoke about the importance of unity, dignity, solidarity, and protecting the humanity of all African people, regardless of nationality or status.

Africa Day is not only a celebration of the continent’s history and progress. It is also a reminder of the responsibility to build societies rooted in inclusion, peace, justice, and mutual respect.

Rest is not laziness. Asking for help is not weakness. Taking care of your mind is not something to be ashamed of.

Many people carry pressure silently while trying to appear strong for everyone else. Mental wellbeing requires space to pause, recover, process, and be supported without judgment.

A healthier society is one where people feel able to speak honestly, seek support when needed, and care for themselves without fear of stigma.

Mental health deserves the same attention, care, and priority as physical health.
